Patna: The search for Bihar’s next full-time Director General of Police has begun following the voluntary retirement of 1991-batch IPS officer Vinay Kumar, who has subsequently been appointed Bihar’s Chief Information Commissioner. The state government is currently working with an interim arrangement, with senior IPS officer Preeta Verma holding additional charge as acting DGP.
Reports have identified Preeta Verma, Jitendra Singh Gangwar and B Srinivasan among the names being considered for the top police post. The three officers belong to the 1991, 1993 and 1992 batches respectively and have held senior positions in Bihar Police as well as on central deputation.
However, the final appointment will depend on the state government’s selection process. The reported panel should not be treated as a confirmation of who will be appointed DGP.
Preeta Verma — 1991-Batch Bihar-Cadre IPS Officer
Preeta Verma is a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre and is currently serving as Director General of Home Guards and Fire Services, Bihar. She was given additional charge as acting DGP when Vinay Kumar went on leave and continued in the role after his VRS.

Verma joined the IPS in 1992 and is a Bihar-cadre officer. Her earlier senior assignments include DG (Training), Bihar.
She has also served on central deputation as Chief Executive Officer of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Government records show her serving as KVIC CEO during 2020–22.
Verma was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2023 while serving as DG (Training), Bihar.
Jitendra Singh Gangwar — 1993-Batch Bihar-Cadre IPS Officer
Jitendra Singh Gangwar is a 1993-batch IPS officer of the Bihar-cadre. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ civil list records his educational qualification as M.E. and his cadre as Bihar.
Gangwar has held several senior positions in Bihar Police, including ADG (Headquarters). He was subsequently promoted to the DG rank and has been serving as DG, Vigilance Investigation Bureau, Bihar. The Bihar government’s Vigilance Department currently lists him as DG of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau.
His service record also includes recognition through police medals. Government records show that he received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2019.
Gangwar has also served as the Bihar Police’s senior headquarters officer and has handled responsibilities connected with vigilance and civil defence.
B Srinivasan — 1992-Batch Bihar-Cadre IPS Officer
Brighu Srinivasan, also referred to in some reports as Brighu Srinivasan, is a 1992-batch Bihar-cadre IPS officer. The Ministry of Home Affairs records his cadre as Bihar and his educational qualification as B.E. (Tech.).
Before moving to central deputation, Srinivasan served in Bihar and was ADG-cum-Director of the Bihar Police Academy, Rajgir. In August 2024, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment as Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG).
His appointment order states that he would remain NSG Director General until August 31, 2027, the date of his superannuation, unless ordered otherwise.
Srinivasan has also received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, according to the IPS civil list.
What Happens Next?
The appointment of Bihar’s full-time DGP will be made through the prescribed selection process. Reports indicate that the state government has been considering a panel of senior IPS officers, with the final decision yet to be announced.
Until a permanent appointment is notified, Preeta Verma continues to handle the additional charge of Bihar DGP under the interim arrangement.
