New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 10.86-km Chouk-Karjat railway section in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of ₹497 crore, aiming to increase capacity for passenger and freight movement along the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route.

The project falls under the railway capacity-augmentation programme covering doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyovers and bypass works.

10.86-Km Section to Be Doubled

The Chouk-Karjat stretch is currently a single-line section of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route, which carries both passenger and freight traffic.

The doubling project is expected to provide an additional track and improve train movement along the corridor.

Key project details:

  • Length: 10.86 km
  • Cost: ₹497 crore
  • Railway: Central Railway
  • Route: Panvel-Chouk-Karjat
  • Additional passenger trains: Five in each direction per day
  • Additional freight capacity: 18.35 million tonnes per annum

Five More Passenger Trains Each Way

Once completed, the doubled section is expected to support five additional passenger trains in each direction every day.

The additional line will increase the capacity of the existing route and provide greater scope for handling train movements.

Freight Capacity to Rise by 18.35 MTPA

The project is also expected to facilitate an additional 18.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic.

Indian Railways said the additional capacity will help improve freight movement and reduce detention of freight trains on the section.

Part of Wider Railway Capacity Expansion

The Chouk-Karjat doubling is part of Indian Railways’ broader programme for capacity augmentation through:

  • Doubling of existing railway lines
  • Tripling and quadrupling of sections
  • Construction of flyovers
  • Development of bypass routes

The project is intended to strengthen the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat corridor by increasing its capacity for both passenger and freight operations.
