New Delhi: Delhi’s seven biodiversity parks have emerged as important natural groundwater recharge zones, helping the national capital address the challenge of declining groundwater levels. During the monsoon season, these parks are estimated to channel nearly 1,100 million gallons of rainwater into the ground, supporting areas facing groundwater stress.
With Delhi expanding rapidly and large areas becoming covered with concrete, these biodiversity parks are acting as natural water sinks where rainwater can seep into the earth instead of flowing away through drains.
Biodiversity Parks Provide Natural Recharge Support to Delhi’s Groundwater
The increasing urbanisation of Delhi has reduced the natural ability of soil to absorb rainwater. Large stretches of the city have become almost water-resistant due to roads, buildings, and concrete surfaces, causing rainwater to flow away instead of replenishing underground water reserves.
The biodiversity parks have been developed with restored native vegetation from the Aravalli hills and Yamuna floodplains, creating natural systems that help capture and store rainwater.
Scientists explain that the roots of indigenous plants improve soil quality and make it function like a sponge, allowing water to gradually move underground and recharge groundwater reserves.

More Than 20 Lakes and Water Bodies Help Store Rainwater
The seven biodiversity parks contain more than 20 small and large lakes and water bodies that play a crucial role in groundwater conservation.
The parks have been designed using scientific methods where:
- Natural slopes are used to direct rainwater towards water bodies.
- Existing drainage patterns are restored.
- Water is stored before slowly seeping into underground aquifers.
- Natural landscapes improve groundwater absorption compared to traditional recharge pits.
This approach allows every possible drop of rainwater to contribute to groundwater replenishment.
Artificial Wetlands Prevent Contaminated Water From Entering Groundwater
Groundwater recharge can create risks if polluted water enters underground reserves. To address this concern, biodiversity parks have developed natural filtration systems.
At locations such as Neela Hauz and Kalindi Biodiversity Park, urban wastewater and surface runoff are first treated through artificial wetlands.
These wetlands use:
- Aquatic plants such as Typha and Phragmites
- Layers of rocky soil
- Natural filtration processes
The system helps remove harmful elements, nitrates, and phosphates from water before it reaches storage areas and slowly enters groundwater reserves.
Role of Different Biodiversity Parks in Groundwater Recharge
Yamuna Biodiversity Park
Spread across 457 acres, the Yamuna Biodiversity Park plays a major role in maintaining groundwater levels in north Delhi and the Yamuna floodplain region.
A 1.5-kilometre-long water channel developed inside the park continuously supports groundwater recharge.
Aravalli Biodiversity Park and Tilpath Valley
The 692-acre Aravalli Biodiversity Park and 173-acre Tilpath Valley help recharge groundwater in south Delhi’s rocky areas.
Through natural depressions, trenches, and fractured rock formations, these parks allow water to penetrate deeper into underground reserves.
Kamla Nehru Ridge
Spread across 215 acres, Kamla Nehru Ridge supports groundwater restoration in areas including Civil Lines and Metcalfe House.
The historic Khooni Jheel acts as an important water recharge point for the region.

Experts believe biodiversity parks are playing a major role in maintaining Delhi’s urban water balance.

Dr. Faiyaz A. Khudsar, Scientist-in-Charge at Yamuna Biodiversity Park, said that biodiversity parks have a direct role in balancing the city’s water system by improving rainwater conservation and groundwater recharge.
