New Delhi: India-Mauritius maritime security cooperation received a major boost after Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam during his official visit to Mauritius. The meeting focused on strengthening maritime security, enhancing defence cooperation, improving operational coordination, and expanding capacity-building initiatives under India’s SAGAR vision for the Indian Ocean Region.

Details of India-Mauritius Maritime Security Cooperation

Admiral Swaminathan visited Mauritius from August 10 to 13, 2026, as part of efforts to deepen bilateral maritime and defence relations. His meeting with Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam reaffirmed the strong partnership between India and Mauritius, especially in maritime security and regional stability. The discussions were attended by senior officials, including the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius.

The talks focused on strengthening cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius National Coast Guard. Key areas discussed included:

  • Enhanced operational cooperation.

Both sides emphasized the importance of working together to address maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.

India Reaffirms Support for Mauritius

During the meeting, India assured continued support for enhancing the capabilities of the Mauritius Police Force and National Coast Guard. The Indian Navy expressed its readiness to provide assistance, training, and technical cooperation to strengthen Mauritius’ maritime security infrastructure. This support reflects India’s long-term commitment to regional security and stability.

The partnership is guided by India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. The initiative aims to promote:

  • Collective maritime security.
  • Economic growth.
  • Regional cooperation.
  • Stability across the Indian Ocean Region.

India and Mauritius continue to work closely under this framework to address common security challenges.

Existing Defence and Naval Cooperation

India and Mauritius already share strong defence ties. The Indian Navy regularly conducts:

  • Joint maritime exercises.
  • Port visits.
  • Hydrographic surveys.
  • Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance support.

Mauritius also participates in several Indian-led naval initiatives and maritime forums.

Apart from the Prime Minister, Admiral Swaminathan also met senior Mauritian officials. These discussions focused on strengthening operational linkages, improving EEZ surveillance, and expanding defence cooperation. Both countries agreed to continue enhancing collaboration in maritime security and capacity building.

Strategic Importance of Mauritius

Mauritius occupies a key position in the Indian Ocean and remains one of India’s most important maritime partners. The island nation plays a crucial role in ensuring regional security, secure sea lanes, and maritime connectivity. India views Mauritius as a trusted partner in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

India-Mauritius Maritime Security Cooperation: Beyond Defence Cooperation

India’s engagement with Mauritius extends beyond security matters. Both countries are also working together on infrastructure, trade, and economic development projects. One notable initiative is the planned container terminal project aimed at enhancing Mauritius’ role as a major transshipment and logistics hub in the Indian Ocean region.
