New Delhi: India has achieved a major milestone in defence self-reliance with the successful durability testing of its indigenous 600 HP engine developed for future armoured vehicles. The DRDO 600 HP Engine has completed extensive testing and is expected to improve the power-to-weight ratio of next-generation combat platforms. The project has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through its Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) in partnership with industry partners.

Details of DRDO 600 HP Engine Durability Trials

According to information released through defence sources, DRDO has completed durability trials on two working prototypes of the indigenous 600-horsepower diesel engine.

The successful tests confirm that the engine can operate reliably for long periods under demanding military conditions. This achievement marks an important step toward reducing India’s dependence on imported armoured vehicle engines.

Why DRDO 600 HP Engine Is Important

Modern armoured vehicles require compact yet powerful engines. The new 600 HP engine has been specially designed for vehicles where mobility, speed, and power-to-weight ratio are critical. A lighter and more compact engine allows military vehicles to carry additional equipment, armour, or payload without sacrificing performance.

Strong Performance During Testing

Reports indicate that the engine performed beyond its baseline rating during trials. During high-altitude testing, the engine reportedly generated around 675 HP at 2,000 RPM, exceeding its nominal 600 HP output. The powerpack also maintained thermal stability and safe exhaust temperatures despite operating in demanding environments. These results demonstrate the engine’s ability to deliver reliable performance in challenging terrains and climates.

Advanced Technology Used

The engine incorporates a modern Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. FADEC continuously monitors engine parameters and optimizes performance automatically. The powerpack also uses a smart liquid-cooling system designed to maintain efficient operating temperatures even during extended missions. Such technologies improve reliability, fuel efficiency, and overall vehicle performance.

What is the Importance of DRDO 600 HP Engine

For decades, India has relied heavily on imported engines for several armoured vehicle programs. Dependence on foreign suppliers can create challenges related to spare parts, maintenance support, technology access, and supply chain security.

An indigenous engine helps address these concerns by giving India greater control over production, upgrades, and long-term support. It also supports the government’s broader “Make in India” and defence indigenisation initiatives.

Cost Advantages

The locally developed powerpack is expected to be significantly more cost-effective than comparable imported solutions. Domestic manufacturing can reduce procurement costs, improve spare-part availability, and create opportunities for Indian industry to participate in future defence programs. Lower lifecycle costs can also benefit the armed forces over the long term.

Which Vehicles Could Use This Engine

The indigenous 600 HP engine is expected to power future armoured fighting vehicles, including the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) and other next-generation combat systems.

The engine’s compact design makes it suitable for a wide range of wheeled and tracked military vehicles where mobility and operational flexibility are essential.
