New Delhi: DRDO hybrid AIP system is a major step toward building stronger and more advanced Indian Navy submarines. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is combining its indigenous Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology with Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries and advanced electric propulsion.

This hybrid system will allow India’s future submarines to stay underwater longer, move more quietly, and carry out missions more safely. It is expected to become a key technology for India’s upcoming Project-76 submarines.

What Is DRDO Hybrid AIP System

India’s indigenous Air-Independent Propulsion system has been developed by DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL).

The system uses Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (PAFC) technology. Unlike diesel engines, fuel cells generate electricity through a silent electrochemical reaction. This process produces:

  • Very little noise
  • Low heat signature
  • Higher fuel efficiency
  • Longer underwater endurance

These advantages make submarines much harder to detect.

Lithium-Ion Batteries Will Be a Game Changer

One of the biggest upgrades planned for India’s future submarines is replacing traditional lead-acid batteries with Lithium-Ion batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries provide several important benefits:

  • Store 2 to 3 times more energy
  • Recharge much faster
  • Reduce battery weight by nearly 40%
  • Occupy less space
  • Require less maintenance
  • Deliver more power during combat situations

This means submarines can remain underwater longer while carrying more advanced equipment.

More Power for Modern Combat Systems

Future submarines need large amounts of electricity to operate modern combat equipment. The hybrid system can power:

  • Advanced sonar systems
  • Combat Management System (CMS)
  • Radar and communication equipment
  • Electronic warfare systems
  • Navigation systems
  • Life-support equipment

The higher electrical output ensures all systems can operate together without reducing stealth.

DRDO Hybrid AIP System: Bigger AIP System for Project-76

Publicly available information suggests DRDO plans to increase the output of its indigenous AIP system from approximately 13.5 kW to nearly 20 kW for future submarines. The additional power will support larger submarines with more advanced sensors, weapons, and onboard systems.

This technology is expected to play a major role in India’s Project-76 conventional submarine programme.

DRDO Hybrid AIP System: Faster, Quieter and More Dangerous

The combination of AIP and Lithium-Ion batteries gives Indian submarines several tactical advantages. These include:

  • Longer underwater patrols
  • Faster underwater acceleration
  • Less time spent charging batteries
  • Lower acoustic signature
  • Reduced thermal signature
  • Better stealth during combat missions

These improvements make submarines much harder for enemy forces to detect and track.

DRDO Tests the System Under Extreme Conditions

Before deployment, DRDO performs detailed testing at its Land-Based Test Facility (LBTF) in Visakhapatnam. The facility recreates harsh underwater conditions, including:

  • Heavy vibrations
  • High humidity
  • Temperature changes
  • Pressure equal to depths of nearly 300 metres

These tests ensure the propulsion system performs safely and reliably in real combat environments.

Indigenous Electric Motor Strengthens Self-Reliance

DRDO is also developing an indigenous 5-megawatt permanent magnet electric propulsion motor. Compared to older propulsion systems, the new motor:

  • Uses less space
  • Offers higher efficiency
  • Produces more power
  • Improves overall submarine performance

This reduces India’s dependence on imported submarine technologies.

Smart Energy Management Will Improve Performance

Future Indian submarines are expected to feature intelligent energy management software. The software will automatically decide when to use:

  • Fuel cells
  • Lithium-Ion batteries
  • Electric propulsion

This helps maximise endurance, improve efficiency, and reduce energy wastage during missions.

Why Does India Need a Hybrid AIP System

Conventional diesel-electric submarines must come close to the surface every few days to recharge their batteries. When they surface or use a snorkel, enemy ships, aircraft, and satellites can detect them.

DRDO’s Hybrid AIP System solves this problem by allowing submarines to remain underwater for much longer without exposing their location. This greatly improves survivability during combat operations.

What Is Project-76

Project-76 is India’s proposed next-generation indigenous conventional submarine programme. These submarines are expected to feature:

  • Advanced stealth technology
  • Indigenous AIP system
  • Lithium-Ion battery technology
  • Improved automation
  • Advanced sensors
  • Modern weapons
  • Smart power management

The project aims to build one of the world’s most capable conventional submarines using mostly indigenous technologies.

What is the Importance of DRDO Hybrid AIP System

India has depended on foreign countries for many submarine technologies for decades. With indigenous fuel cells, Lithium-Ion batteries, electric propulsion motors, and integrated power systems, DRDO is building a complete domestic underwater propulsion ecosystem.

This will strengthen India’s defence manufacturing capability and reduce long-term dependence on imports.
