New Delhi: The Indian Navy ₹1 lakh crore warship project could become one of India’s biggest indigenous naval modernization programs. The proposed plan includes next-generation destroyers, advanced stealth frigates, and large surface combatants under Projects 15C, 17B, and 18A. Although the projects are still in the planning and approval stage, they are expected to significantly strengthen India’s maritime security and support the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Details of Indian Navy ₹1 Lakh Crore Warship Project

The Indian Navy is preparing a massive fleet expansion worth around ₹1 lakh crore.

The proposal includes three major indigenous warship programs:

  • Project 15C: Next-generation guided missile destroyers
  • Project 17B: Advanced stealth frigates
  • Project 18A: Next-generation large surface combatants

These projects are currently undergoing internal planning and are expected to move through the government’s defence procurement process before receiving final approval.

Project 15C: Next-Generation Destroyers

Project 15C is expected to be the first major program in this expansion. According to available information:

  • Around four advanced destroyers are planned.
  • The estimated project cost is about ₹50,000 crore.
  • The Ministry of Defence is expected to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) after approvals.
  • Ship construction could begin roughly three years after contracts are finalized.

These destroyers are expected to succeed the Visakhapatnam-class (Project 15B) with improved stealth, better sensors, advanced electronic warfare systems, and stronger strike capabilities.

Project 17B: Six Advanced Stealth Frigates

Project 17B aims to build six next-generation stealth frigates. Key highlights include:

  • Estimated project value of around ₹40,000 crore.
  • The Navy plans to divide construction between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
  • Each shipyard is expected to build three frigates.

These ships will follow the successful Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) frigates and are expected to feature improved stealth technology, modern sensors, and more powerful weapons.

Project 18A: India’s Future Large Surface Combatants

Project 18A is considered the most ambitious program among the three. The Navy is planning to develop six large surface combatants with an estimated displacement of 13,000 to 15,000 tonnes. Expected capabilities include:

  • Integrated Electric Propulsion (IEP)
  • Up to 144 Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells
  • Ability to carry BrahMos missiles and future hypersonic weapons
  • Long-range air defence and multi-role combat capability

Because of the complexity of these warships, the project is still in its early design stage. Physical construction is expected to begin only after several years of development and approvals.

What is the Main Focus of Indian Navy ₹1 Lakh Crore Warship Project

The proposed projects strongly support India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Most of the construction work is expected to be handled by Indian shipyards, mainly:

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL)
  • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE)

Using domestic shipyards will strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, generate skilled jobs, and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

What is the Importance of Indian Navy ₹1 Lakh Crore Warship Project

The Indian Ocean Region has become increasingly important for global trade and security. A larger and more modern fleet would help the Indian Navy:

  • Protect sea trade routes.
  • Improve long-range naval operations.
  • Strengthen deterrence against regional threats.
  • Support carrier battle groups.
  • Enhance India’s maritime presence across the Indo-Pacific.

Current Status

The proposed ₹1 lakh crore naval expansion has not yet received final government approval. The projects remain in the planning and procurement phase, with official tenders and approvals expected over the coming years before construction begins.
