Visakhapatnam: INS Mahendragiri will be commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 11, 2026, at Visakhapatnam. The indigenous stealth frigate is the sixth warship under Project 17A and marks another important step in India’s effort to strengthen its naval power through home-built defence technology. The warship has been designed and built with a high level of indigenous content, supporting the country’s goal of becoming self-reliant in defence.
What is INS Mahendragiri
INS Mahendragiri (F38) is a modern Nilgiri-class stealth guided-missile frigate. It has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
The ship is named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats. It is the first Indian naval warship to carry this historic name, symbolizing strength, resilience, and determination.
A Big Achievement Under Project 17A
Project 17A is India’s advanced warship-building programme aimed at replacing older frigates with more capable and stealthier vessels. INS Mahendragiri is the sixth ship of this class. The project focuses on modern design, improved stealth technology, advanced sensors, and powerful weapons while using more than 75% indigenous content. This highlights India’s growing defence manufacturing capability under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
INS Mahendragiri: Advanced Features and Combat Role
INS Mahendragiri is built for multiple naval missions. It can perform:
- Anti-air warfare
- Anti-surface warfare
- Anti-submarine warfare
- Maritime security operations
- Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
- Search and rescue missions
The frigate also features advanced stealth technology, reduced radar signature, high automation, electronic warfare systems, and an integrated combat management system for modern naval operations.
Powerful Weapons
The stealth frigate is equipped with several advanced weapon systems, including:
- BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
- Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system
- Advanced torpedoes
- Anti-submarine rocket launchers
- AK-630 close-in weapon system
These systems allow the ship to defend against threats from air, sea, and underwater.
What is the Importance of INS Mahendragiri
The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri strengthens India’s maritime security and expands the Indian Navy’s combat capability. The project has also supported hundreds of Indian industries, including many MSMEs, creating jobs and boosting India’s indigenous defence ecosystem. As more Project 17A frigates join the fleet, India continues to improve its position as a leading warship-building nation.
