Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Police Department will establish a dedicated Police Sports Academy to provide professional training, modern equipment and advanced infrastructure to police personnel and nurture athletes for national and international competitions.
DGP Harish Kumar Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, announced the initiative while addressing the valedictory ceremony of the State Police Sports and Games Meet-2026 at the Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) 6th Battalion in Mangalagiri. He also unveiled the official logo of the proposed academy.
AP Police Partners With VIT-AP University
As part of the initiative, the Andhra Pradesh Police has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with VIT-AP University, Amaravati to support the establishment and functioning of the sports academy.

The academy is expected to provide police personnel with:
- Professional sports training
- Modern sporting equipment
- Advanced training infrastructure
- Structured preparation for competitive events
- Opportunities to develop sporting talent within the police force
The initiative is aimed at making sports and physical fitness a more integral part of police personnel’s professional development.
Nearly 1,900 Police Athletes Took Part
The announcement came at the conclusion of the state’s first major Police Sports and Games Meet of this scale.
According to reports, the four-day event saw participation from nearly 1,900 police athletes representing 15 divisions. The DGP congratulated the medal winners and encouraged other participants to continue training and improve their performance.
The Visakhapatnam Range emerged as the overall champion in both the men’s and women’s categories.
Focus on Fitness and National-Level Performance
Gupta stressed that the changing nature of crime and policing makes physical fitness increasingly important for police personnel.
He encouraged officers and other personnel to incorporate sports into their professional lives and expressed hope that athletes from Andhra Pradesh Police would perform strongly at the All India Police Games.
The proposed academy is therefore intended not only to improve fitness within the force but also to create a structured pathway for police sportspersons seeking to compete at higher levels.
Women Personnel to Receive Greater Support
The DGP also emphasised the department’s commitment to supporting women personnel in sports.
He said women athletes would receive encouragement to help them excel at the state and national levels. The department’s sports initiatives are intended to provide personnel across categories with greater opportunities to develop their sporting abilities.
Sports Seen as Tool for Teamwork and Morale
The DGP also highlighted the role of sports in strengthening unity and teamwork within the police force.
He said that despite differences in ranks and postings, police personnel remain part of one team and that better coordination among them would ultimately help improve public service.
The proposed Police Sports Academy is expected to give this approach a permanent institutional framework by combining fitness, professional sports training and competitive preparation under one platform.
