New Delhi: India’s defence modernization has received a major boost as the Ghatak UCAV programme moves forward with fresh approvals from the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).

The decision to greenlight multiple squadrons of these indigenous stealth drones marks a big step toward strengthening India’s air combat capabilities. Developed by DRDO, the Ghatak UCAV is designed to carry out high-risk missions without putting pilots in danger. This development highlights India’s push for self-reliance in defence technology and advanced unmanned warfare systems.

Details of Ghatak UCAV Programme

In a significant decision, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the procurement of four squadrons of Ghatak Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) for the Indian Air Force.

  • Each squadron is expected to include around 20 drones, indicating a large-scale deployment plan.
  • The approval follows earlier recommendations by the Defence Procurement Board to move ahead with acquiring around 60 Ghatak drones.

This move signals that the project has now entered a crucial phase of execution after years of development.

What is the Ghatak UCAV

The Ghatak UCAV is India’s first indigenous stealth combat drone being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

What are the Features of Ghatak UCAV Programme

  • Stealth flying-wing design for low radar detection
  • Internal weapons bay for missiles and precision bombs
  • Autonomous operations with advanced AI systems
  • Capability to perform deep-strike missions inside enemy territory

The drone is designed to operate either independently or alongside manned fighter jets in modern warfare scenarios.

Why This Approval is Important

This DAC clearance is not just a procurement step—it is a strategic milestone.

1. Boost to Indigenous Defence

  • Strengthens India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) initiative
  • Reduces dependence on foreign drone systems

2. Safer Combat Operations

  • Eliminates risk to pilots during high-threat missions
  • Ideal for operations in heavily defended airspace

3. Future Warfare Readiness

  • Supports Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUMT)
  • Aligns with Indian Air Force’s Vision 2047 roadmap

Advanced Technology Behind Ghatak UCAV Programme

The Ghatak UCAV is based on cutting-edge aerospace technologies:

  • Flying-wing configuration for stealth and efficiency
  • Use of carbon composite materials
  • Equipped with autonomous navigation and landing systems
  • Likely powered by a derivative of India’s Kaveri jet engine

Earlier trials of the Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator validated key systems for this project.

What is the Role of Ghatak UCAV in Modern Warfare

The Ghatak drone is designed to perform multiple high-value roles:

  • Destroy enemy air defence systems
  • Conduct precision strikes on strategic targets
  • Support fighter jets in coordinated missions
  • Carry out surveillance and electronic warfare

It is especially useful in scenarios where human risk must be minimized.
