New Delhi: HAL completes Tejas Mk2 airframe assembly and has set an ambitious timeline for the aircraft’s next development stages. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that the first Tejas Mk2 prototype has completed structural assembly and is now moving toward ground testing.

According to statements by HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kumar, the aircraft is expected to begin ground runs by March 2027 and undertake its maiden flight later in 2027. This marks a major step in India’s efforts to develop an advanced indigenous fighter aircraft.

What Is Tejas Mk2

The Tejas Mk2 is an upgraded and larger version of the Tejas Mk1 fighter aircraft currently operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The aircraft has been designed to provide greater range, higher payload capacity, improved survivability, and advanced combat capabilities. Tejas Mk2 is expected to replace older aircraft such as the Jaguar, Mirage 2000, and MiG-29 fleets over the coming decades.

HAL Achieves Major Tejas Mk2 Airframe Assembly Milestone

HAL has successfully joined the front, center, and rear fuselage sections of the first Tejas Mk2 prototype. With this achievement, the aircraft has moved from component manufacturing to full airframe integration. This stage is considered one of the most important milestones before systems integration and flight testing begin.

Transition To Flight-Test Preparation

The completion of structural assembly allows engineers to start installing critical systems. These include avionics, flight-control systems, wiring, hydraulic systems, sensors, and mission equipment. The aircraft will now undergo extensive testing before receiving clearance for flight trials.

Testing Roadmap And Future Clearances

HAL has announced that the first Tejas Mk2 prototype is expected to begin ground runs by March 2027. Ground runs help engineers verify engine performance, aircraft systems, structural integrity, and safety before flight. The aircraft remains on the ground during these tests while all major systems are evaluated.

First Flight Expected In Late 2027

After successful ground testing and system validation, the prototype is expected to conduct its maiden flight in late 2027.

The first flight will be a crucial step in validating the aircraft’s aerodynamic performance and flight characteristics. It will also provide valuable data for future refinements.

Tejas Mk2 Airframe Assembly: Four-Prototype Testing Strategy

HAL plans to follow a structured testing approach using four prototypes. The first two prototypes will focus on flight safety, aerodynamics, and systems integration. The third and fourth prototypes are expected to support advanced weapons integration and operational trials beginning around 2030.

Production Clearance Timeline

If development progresses as planned, Tejas Mk2 could receive full production clearance by 2031. This would pave the way for large-scale induction into the Indian Air Force.

FAQs

Which Engine Will Power Tejas Mk2?

The aircraft will be powered by the GE Aerospace F414-INS6 afterburning turbofan engine, which delivers significantly higher thrust than the F404 engine used in Tejas Mk1.

When Will Tejas Mk2 Conduct Its First Flight?

According to HAL, the first Tejas Mk2 prototype is expected to undertake its maiden flight in late 2027 after completing ground testing and validation.

When Could Tejas Mk2 Enter Production?

If development and testing proceed according to schedule, Tejas Mk2 is expected to receive full production clearance around 2031.
