New Delhi: Egypt evaluates India’s Pinaka rocket system as Cairo explores new options to modernise its long-range artillery, reduce procurement costs, and diversify defence imports. The Indian-made Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is attracting international attention for its precision, modular design, and affordability. While no official procurement agreement has been announced, the evaluation reflects Egypt’s growing interest in India’s indigenous defence technology.

The reported assessment comes as India continues to promote the Pinaka system globally following recent successful flight tests of its Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR), which demonstrated high accuracy and compatibility with existing Pinaka launchers.

India Egypt Pinaka Deal: Why Is Egypt Interested in the Pinaka Rocket System

Egypt has been working to diversify its defence suppliers instead of depending heavily on a few traditional partners. The country has expanded defence cooperation with several nations in recent years to improve military readiness while reducing risks linked to geopolitical tensions and export restrictions.

For Egypt, India’s Pinaka system offers a combination of affordability, precision, and operational flexibility, making it an attractive option for modern artillery forces.

What Is the Pinaka Rocket System

The Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) is an indigenous rocket artillery system designed and developed by DRDO for the Indian Army. The system is capable of launching 12 rockets in just 44 seconds, delivering rapid and concentrated firepower over a large battlefield area. It has been designed for quick deployment, high mobility, and fast reloading.

What are the Features of the Pinaka System

Some of the major capabilities of the Pinaka rocket system include:

  • High-volume rocket fire within seconds.
  • Multiple rocket variants using the same launcher platform.
  • High mobility across different terrains.
  • Precision-guided rocket options.
  • Reduced maintenance due to its modular design.
  • Lower operating costs compared to several foreign systems.

India Egypt Pinaka Deal: Guided Pinaka Offers Greater Accuracy

The latest Guided Pinaka variant uses an Inertial Navigation System (INS) together with GPS and India’s NavIC satellite navigation system for terminal guidance. This allows the rocket to strike military targets with much greater accuracy while reducing unintended collateral damage. The system is intended to engage command centres, logistics hubs, radar installations, and other high-value targets.

Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket Achieves New Milestone

In July 2026, DRDO successfully conducted the flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha. According to the Ministry of Defence, the rocket accurately struck its target after completing all planned flight manoeuvres. The successful test also demonstrated that different Pinaka rocket variants can be launched from the same in-service launcher.

India Egypt Pinaka Deal: Cost Advantage Could Benefit Egypt

One of the biggest attractions of the Pinaka system is its comparatively lower acquisition and operational cost. A cost-effective rocket artillery system enables countries to maintain strong firepower while keeping defence spending under control. This makes the Pinaka platform particularly appealing for nations seeking large-scale artillery capability without the higher costs often associated with Western systems.

Modular Design Simplifies Operations

The Pinaka launcher can fire different rocket variants without requiring major structural modifications. This modular approach simplifies logistics, maintenance, crew training, and battlefield deployment while giving armed forces greater operational flexibility.

India’s Defence Exports Continue to Grow

India has been steadily expanding its defence exports by promoting indigenous military equipment under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. Successful trials of advanced Pinaka variants have strengthened India’s position as an emerging exporter of modern artillery systems. Growing international interest reflects increasing confidence in Indian defence manufacturing capabilities.
