According to Russian officials, the proposal includes an initial supply of ready-to-fly Su-57E stealth fighters, followed by licensed production in India, along with the possibility of integrating Indian-made weapons and systems into the aircraft.

The offer could become one of the most significant fighter aircraft deals under India’s defence modernisation plans.

India Russia Two-Seater Su-57E Deal: What Is Russia Offering?

According to reports, Russia has proposed a phased approach:

Phase 1: Immediate Aircraft Supply

India would receive a batch of operational Su-57E stealth fighters to quickly strengthen its air combat capabilities.

Phase 2: Licensed Manufacturing in India

Production could gradually move to Indian facilities under a technology transfer arrangement, supporting the government’s “Make in India” initiative.

Phase 3: Joint Development

Russia has also proposed co-developing a dedicated two-seat Su-57 version designed specifically for Indian operational requirements.

Why the Two-Seater Variant Matters

Most modern stealth fighters are single-seat aircraft. However, Russia believes a two-seat configuration could offer several advantages:

  • Better mission management during complex combat operations.
  • Dedicated weapons systems operator in the second cockpit.
  • Improved control of unmanned combat drones.
  • Enhanced network-centric warfare capabilities.
  • Easier pilot training and conversion programs.

Analysts believe such a platform could support future manned-unmanned teaming concepts that many air forces are exploring.

Indian Weapons Integration: A Major Attraction

One of the most important aspects of the proposal is the possibility of integrating Indian-developed weapons onto the Su-57E.

Potential benefits include:

  • Greater operational independence.
  • Reduced dependence on foreign weapon suppliers.
  • Compatibility with existing Indian defence systems.
  • Lower long-term operational costs.
  • Support for indigenous defence technology development.

This could allow India to use domestically developed missiles and future indigenous weapon systems without relying entirely on Russian equipment.

What Is the Su-57E?

The Su-57E is the export version of Russia’s fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft.

What are the Features of Su-57E

  • Stealth design
  • Super-manoeuvrability
  • Advanced sensor fusion
  • Internal weapons bays
  • Long-range strike capability
  • Multirole combat performance
  • Network-enabled operations

The aircraft was developed by Sukhoi and is considered Russia’s answer to Western fifth-generation fighters.

Strategic Importance of India Russia Two-Seater Su-57E Deal

India currently faces growing security challenges in the region while simultaneously developing its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

The Russian proposal could offer:

  • Faster access to fifth-generation fighter capability.
  • Technology transfer opportunities.
  • Expansion of domestic aerospace manufacturing.
  • Strengthening of existing India-Russia defence cooperation.
  • A potential bridge until indigenous stealth fighter programmes mature.
