Darwin: Indian Air Force Rafale fighters are taking part in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, one of the world’s biggest multinational air combat exercises, being held in Darwin, Australia. The exercise gives the Indian Air Force (IAF) an opportunity to train with leading air forces from around the world, improve joint operations, and strengthen defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

What Is Exercise Pitch Black 2026

Exercise Pitch Black is the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) premier biennial multinational air combat exercise. This year’s edition is being held from 20 July to 7 August 2026 at RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal and Amberley.

The exercise brings together around 100 aircraft and more than 2,500 military personnel from over 20 participating nations. It focuses on realistic combat training, night flying, and improving coordination between friendly air forces.

Indian Air Force Rafale Fighters Lead India’s Participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force has deployed its Rafale multirole fighter aircraft for the exercise. The Rafales are supported by the C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft and the IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuelling aircraft. The Indian contingent also includes experienced pilots, engineers, technicians, controllers and other specialists who will participate in complex multinational air combat missions.

Exercise Pitch Black 2026: Rafale Flypast Marks the Opening Ceremony

The Indian Air Force said a spectacular Rafale flypast over Darwin’s famous Mindil Beach officially marked the opening of Exercise Pitch Black 2026. The IAF also announced that its contingent won the gold medal in the multinational football tournament, highlighting strong teamwork and camaraderie among participating countries.

Indian Team Meets Australian Prime Minister

During the opening ceremony in Darwin, the Indian Air Force contingent interacted with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The Indian High Commission in Australia described the event as another important step in strengthening the growing defence partnership between India and Australia.
