New Delhi: India’s effort to modernize its air transport fleet has attracted major global aerospace companies. In a significant development, Lockheed Martin India aircraft production plans could expand if the American defense giant wins the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) $10.5 billion Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) contract. The company has proposed manufacturing 48 out of 60 aircraft in India in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), supporting the government’s Make In India initiative.
Why Is India Looking For New Transport Aircraft
The Indian Air Force issued a tender in August for 60 medium transport aircraft. The new aircraft are intended to replace ageing transport platforms and strengthen India’s airlift capabilities.

The requirement is for aircraft capable of carrying payloads between 18 and 30 tonnes while operating from high-altitude and semi-prepared airfields. This is especially important for missions in challenging regions such as Ladakh and border areas.
Details of Lockheed Martin India Aircraft Production Plan
Lockheed Martin has proposed a mixed delivery model. Under the plan, 12 aircraft would be delivered directly in flyaway condition, while the remaining 48 aircraft would be manufactured in India if the company wins the contract.
This would be one of the largest military aircraft manufacturing programs ever undertaken in India by a foreign aerospace company.
Partnership With Tata Advanced Systems
Lockheed Martin has teamed up with Tata Advanced Systems Limited for the project. The two companies already have an established partnership in Hyderabad, where components and tail assemblies (empennages) for the C-130J Super Hercules are manufactured for the global supply chain. Company officials say this existing manufacturing network could be expanded significantly if the bid is successful.
Which Aircraft Is Lockheed Martin Offering
Lockheed Martin is offering the C-130J-30 Super Hercules. The aircraft is already familiar to the Indian Air Force, which currently operates 12 C-130J aircraft.
Over the years, these aircraft have accumulated more than 58,000 flight hours and have been used in:
- High-altitude operations in Ladakh
- Humanitarian missions during Nepal floods
- Evacuation of Indian citizens from Sudan
- Disaster relief and emergency operations
These missions demonstrate the aircraft’s versatility and reliability in demanding environments.
Lockheed Martin India Aircraft Production Plan For A Common Fleet Of 72 Aircraft
Lockheed Martin is not only offering new aircraft. The company has also proposed upgrading the Indian Air Force’s existing fleet of 12 C-130Js to the same advanced configuration as the new aircraft.
If approved, India could eventually operate a common fleet of 72 similarly configured aircraft. Such standardization can simplify maintenance, pilot training, logistics, and spare parts management.
Strong Competition In The Race
Lockheed Martin is not the only company competing for the project. Brazilian aerospace company Embraer has partnered with Mahindra Group and is offering the C-390 Millennium transport aircraft.
Other Indian companies participating in the program include:
- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)
- Adani Defence & Aerospace
- Reliance Defence
- Tata Advanced Systems Limited
- Mahindra Group
The final decision will depend on technical performance, cost, manufacturing benefits, and long-term strategic value for India.
