New Delhi: India-Russia defence cooperation is back in focus after reports claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a fresh push to offer the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jet to India. The proposal reportedly includes advanced missile systems, technology transfer, local manufacturing support, and assistance for India’s indigenous fighter aircraft programme. According to reports, India is carefully evaluating its long-term defence priorities before making any decision.

Updates on India Russia Su-57 Fighter Jet Deal

Russia has intensified its efforts to market the Su-57 stealth fighter to India. The latest proposal reportedly includes not only the aircraft but also advanced weapons, operational support, and significant technology-sharing arrangements. Russian officials have previously stated that they are ready for joint production and technology cooperation without major restrictions.

The Su-57 is Russia’s most advanced fifth-generation fighter aircraft and is designed for stealth operations, air superiority missions, and long-range strike capabilities.

What Is Included In Russia’s Offer

Advanced Missile Package

Reports indicate that Russia has proposed a package that includes several advanced missile systems alongside the Su-57 fighter. Among them is the Kh-69 stealth cruise missile, designed for long-range precision strikes against heavily defended targets. The missile is intended to penetrate modern air-defence networks.

Russia has also reportedly highlighted the R-37M long-range air-to-air missile, which is designed to engage high-value airborne targets at very long distances. In addition, the package is said to include the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missile, one of Russia’s most advanced strategic weapons. Reports claim the missile can travel at hypersonic speeds and strike targets at long ranges.

Technology Transfer And Local Production

A major attraction of the Russian proposal is the offer of technology transfer and local manufacturing. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is willing to support production in India and share technologies associated with the aircraft programme. Earlier reports also suggested potential cooperation with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for local manufacturing activities.

India Russia Su-57 Fighter Jet Deal: Why Is India Being Cautious

India has not announced any decision on purchasing the Su-57. The Indian Air Force is simultaneously pursuing its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, which is expected to become India’s first homegrown fifth-generation stealth fighter. India has also strengthened defence ties with France and continues to invest in domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.

Defence experts note that India is focused on balancing immediate operational requirements with long-term self-reliance goals under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

How Could The Su-57 Benefit India

Supporters of the proposal argue that the Su-57 could help India bridge capability gaps while indigenous programmes continue to mature. The aircraft is designed with stealth features, advanced sensors, and network-centric warfare capabilities. Combined with long-range missiles, it could significantly improve strike and air-superiority capabilities.

India Russia Su-57 Fighter Jet Deal: Challenges And Concerns

Despite the attractive package, India faces several considerations. These include cost, long-term maintenance requirements, production timelines, and compatibility with India’s broader defence modernisation plans. India also remains committed to developing indigenous aerospace technologies through programmes such as AMCA.
