New Delhi: Russia has submitted a proposal to India for the supply of five additional S-400 missile systems. The proposed S-400 missile system deal, estimated at more than ₹50,000 crore, aims to strengthen India’s air defence network amid evolving regional security challenges. According to reports, the proposal is currently under review by India’s Ministry of Defence.

The development comes as India continues to expand its multi-layered air defence shield while simultaneously advancing indigenous programmes such as Project Kusha. Defence experts believe the additional S-400 systems would significantly improve India’s ability to counter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missile threats.

Russia Submits Proposal For Five Additional S-400 Systems

Russia has officially responded to India’s tender for five more S-400 Sudarshan long-range air defence systems. The proposal has been received by the Indian Defence Ministry and is currently being evaluated through the procurement process.

The project is expected to cost over ₹50,000 crore, making it one of the largest air defence acquisitions currently under consideration by India.

S-400 Missile System Deal: Why India Wants More S-400 Systems

India already operates S-400 systems acquired under the landmark 2018 agreement with Russia. The additional units are intended to further strengthen India’s air defence coverage along critical sectors and enhance protection against multiple aerial threats.

Officials have indicated that expanding the S-400 network would improve India’s ability to create a more robust and layered missile defence architecture.

What Is The S-400 Missile System

The S-400 Triumf, known in India as the Sudarshan system, is one of the world’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence systems. It is designed to detect, track, and engage multiple targets simultaneously, including fighter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

What are the Capabilities Of The S-400 Missile System

The system can detect threats at very long distances and provide early warning against hostile aircraft and missile attacks.

Multi-Target Engagement

The S-400 can track and engage multiple airborne threats at the same time, making it highly effective in complex combat situations.

Integrated Air Defence

The system can be integrated with India’s broader air defence network to create layered protection for strategic assets and population centres.

What is the Role Of S-400 During Operation Sindoor

The S-400 system gained significant attention during Operation Sindoor. According to retired Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, the system played a crucial role in deterring hostile aircraft and strengthening India’s defensive posture during the operation.

Reports suggest that the performance of the S-400 during the operation reinforced India’s confidence in the system and contributed to plans for additional acquisitions.

Pakistan’s Reported Efforts To Locate S-400 Positions

Air Marshal Mishra stated that Pakistan allegedly activated intelligence assets and sleeper networks in an effort to identify the locations of India’s S-400 systems during Operation Sindoor. These claims underline the strategic importance of the missile defence system within India’s security architecture.

Project Kusha And India’s Indigenous Air Defence Plans

While India continues to procure advanced foreign systems, it is also investing heavily in indigenous air defence capabilities. Project Kusha is being developed as a long-range air defence system capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise missiles, stealth targets, and drones.

How Project Kusha Complements S-400

Project Kusha is expected to work alongside existing systems such as the S-400 to create a stronger and more self-reliant air defence network. The programme forms an important part of India’s long-term defence modernization strategy.
