New Delhi: India has achieved another milestone in defence self-reliance as Tata Advanced Systems completes internal trials of the Indigenous 155mm Mounted Gun System (MGS). The new artillery platform combines the firepower of a 155mm/52-calibre gun with the mobility of a high-performance military vehicle, offering the Indian Army a modern “shoot-and-scoot” capability.

The system is based on the proven Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), which was developed by DRDO in partnership with Indian industry. The Mounted Gun System is designed to improve battlefield mobility, deployment speed, and operational flexibility.

What Is The Tata 155mm Mounted Gun System

The Mounted Gun System (MGS) is a truck-mounted artillery platform that integrates a powerful 155mm/52-calibre howitzer onto a high-mobility military vehicle.

Unlike traditional towed artillery, the gun is mounted directly on the vehicle. This eliminates the need for a separate towing vehicle and allows faster movement between firing positions.

The platform combines heavy firepower with rapid mobility, making it suitable for modern battlefield requirements.

Based On Proven ATAGS Technology

The Tata MGS uses technology derived from the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS). ATAGS was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with industry partners including Tata Advanced Systems. The gun system has already completed extensive trials and is considered one of India’s most advanced indigenous artillery platforms. The mounted version aims to bring the same firepower while significantly improving mobility and deployment speed.

Indigenous Development Strengthens Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The successful internal trials highlight India’s growing capability to design and manufacture advanced defence systems domestically. The project supports the government’s vision of reducing dependence on foreign military equipment and strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing.

Key Features Of The Tata 155mm Mounted Gun System

One of the biggest advantages of the MGS is its mobility. The system is mounted on a high-mobility vehicle chassis, allowing it to travel quickly across highways, deserts, and difficult terrain. This makes it easier to deploy artillery support wherever needed. Another important feature is its automated ammunition handling system.

This reduces the physical workload on the crew and enables faster firing rates during combat operations. Automated systems also improve efficiency and reduce response time.

Advanced Fire Control System

The MGS includes modern digital fire-control and positioning systems. These technologies help crews quickly identify targets, calculate firing solutions, and engage threats with improved accuracy.

The system is also equipped with automatic gun alignment and positioning features that improve operational effectiveness.

Tata 155mm Mounted Gun System Range And Firepower

According to DRDO, the Mounted Gun System is capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 45 kilometres with high accuracy. The 155mm/52-calibre gun is designed to deliver devastating firepower against enemy positions while maintaining rapid mobility after firing. The system is compatible with NATO-standard ammunition and can use different types of extended-range projectiles.

Shoot-And-Scoot Capability

Modern warfare increasingly requires artillery systems to move quickly after firing. The Tata Mounted Gun System is designed with a “shoot-and-scoot” capability, allowing it to fire and relocate before enemy forces can launch counter-battery attacks. This significantly improves survivability on the battlefield and enhances operational flexibility.

Strategic Importance of Tata 155mm Mounted Gun System For The Indian Army

The Indian Army is modernising its artillery force to meet future operational requirements. Truck-mounted artillery systems offer a balance between mobility, firepower, and cost-effectiveness. They can be transported quickly across large distances and deployed rapidly in sensitive border regions. The successful completion of internal trials is an important step before further evaluation and possible induction into military service.
