New Delhi: Indian defence industrial corridors have attracted investment commitments of nearly Rs 70,000 crore, making them a major driver of the country’s growing defence manufacturing sector. The update was shared by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who said the two corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are seeing strong investor interest and several projects have already started.

According to the Ministry of Defence and the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), these corridors are helping India build a stronger defence production ecosystem by attracting private companies, public sector firms, MSMEs, and global suppliers.

Details of Indian Defence Industrial Corridors Growth

In an interview, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said the combined investment commitments in the two Defence Industrial Corridors have reached around Rs 70,000 crore. He added that projects worth nearly Rs 10,000 crore have already been grounded, meaning work has begun on these investments. The government believes this strong response shows growing confidence in India’s defence manufacturing sector.

Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor Leads Investments

The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) has attracted the largest share of investment. As of April 2026:

  • Investment commitments: Rs 42,057 crore
  • Grounded investments: Rs 4,409 crore

The corridor includes six major nodes:

  • Lucknow
  • Kanpur
  • Jhansi
  • Aligarh
  • Agra
  • Chitrakoot

Launched in 2018, the project is being developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).

Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor Also Grows Rapidly

The Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor has also seen strong investor interest. By April 2026:

  • Investment commitments: Rs 32,699 crore
  • Grounded investments: Rs 6,446 crore

The corridor covers five industrial centres:

  • Chennai
  • Hosur
  • Coimbatore
  • Salem
  • Tiruchirappalli

Together, both corridors are becoming key centres for India’s defence manufacturing expansion.

Indian Defence Industrial Corridors: Major Defence Companies Investing

Several leading companies have announced investments in these corridors, including:

  • BrahMos Aerospace
  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL)
  • Tata Technologies
  • SAIL
  • Adani Defence & Aerospace
  • Optic Electronic India
  • Amitec

The Defence Secretary also said that many MSMEs and component manufacturers are expected to invest in the coming years.

Indian Defence Industrial Corridors Are Meant to Build an Ecosystem

Rajesh Kumar Singh clarified that the Defence Industrial Corridors are not traditional infrastructure schemes. Instead, they identify locations where a strong defence manufacturing ecosystem can develop naturally through investments, suppliers, skilled workers, and supporting industries. He said the corridors send a clear signal to investors that these regions have long-term potential for defence production.

Ease of Doing Business Will Drive More Investments

The Defence Secretary said future investments will depend on three major factors:

  • Better visibility of defence orders
  • Ease of doing business
  • Support from central and state governments

He noted that several state governments are offering capital incentives and other support programmes to attract manufacturers.

According to him, this combination will play an important role in increasing defence investments across India.
