New Delhi: The Delhi government has launched an innovative initiative called ‘Arpan’ to make the national capital cleaner, greener and more sustainable. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta formally inaugurated the first ‘Arpan’ old clothes donation centre at the Punjabi Bagh West Metro Station.

The initiative aims to promote scientific waste management and the circular economy in Delhi by encouraging citizens to donate old but usable clothes instead of throwing them away.

‘Arpan’ Initiative Focuses on Reuse, Recycling and Upcycling

The primary objective of the ‘Arpan’ initiative is to encourage people to donate clothes that are no longer needed but are still in usable condition.

The collected clothes will be processed for:

  • Reuse
  • Recycling
  • Upcycling

The initiative is expected to help reduce textile waste and prevent unnecessary damage to the environment. It also aims to promote responsible consumption habits among citizens.

By giving old clothes a new purpose, the programme will support the principles of a circular economy, where resources are reused and recycled instead of being discarded as waste.

‘Arpan’ Centres to Come Up at 10 Metro Stations

To make clothes donation easy and convenient for citizens, the Delhi government will establish ‘Arpan’ donation centres at 10 major Delhi Metro stations in the first phase. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The centres will allow commuters to donate their old clothes conveniently during their daily travel. The expansion of the initiative to multiple metro stations is expected to encourage more citizens to participate in the campaign.

CM Rekha Gupta Appeals to Delhi Residents

At the inauguration, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta appealed to Delhi residents to donate usable clothes that are lying unused in their homes. She urged citizens to actively participate in the initiative and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener and more prosperous Delhi.

The government believes that greater public participation will help make the campaign successful and strengthen efforts towards sustainable development and environmental protection.

Initiative to Create Employment Opportunities for Women

The ‘Arpan’ initiative is also expected to create new livelihood opportunities for women.

Women will have opportunities to participate in activities related to:

  • Collection of donated clothes
  • Sorting and segregation
  • Processing of clothes
  • Other related activities

The initiative is therefore expected to generate both environmental and socio-economic benefits, combining waste reduction with livelihood opportunities.

Delhi Government Seeks Public Participation

The Delhi government has urged citizens to donate old but usable clothes instead of disposing of them as waste.

According to the government, the initiative can help:

  • Support people in need.
  • Reduce textile waste.
  • Promote reuse and recycling.
  • Encourage responsible consumption.
  • Create livelihood opportunities for women.
  • Contribute to a cleaner and greener Delhi.

The government has emphasised that active participation from citizens will be crucial to the success of the ‘Arpan’ campaign and will help Delhi move towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future.
