Delhi’s New Dust Fighters: 70 GPS-Tracked Sweepers Coming Soon

Delhi will deploy 70 GPS-tracked mechanical sweepers on major roads as part of a ₹2,500-crore project to control road dust and improve sanitation.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: The Delhi government is set to deploy 70 mechanical road-sweeping machines across major roads and high-traffic corridors as part of a ₹2,500-crore project aimed at reducing dust pollution and improving the city’s sanitation system.

The new machines will support regular road cleaning while using technology to reduce the amount of dust released back into the air during sweeping.

70 Machines to Target Major Roads

The mechanical sweepers will operate on key arterial roads and busy corridors across Delhi. Authorities plan to use the machines for systematic cleaning and dust suppression, with operations expected to cover different parts of the national capital.

The large-scale project also includes efforts to upgrade mechanised cleaning operations, improve waste handling and strengthen anti-dust measures.

Dust-Suppression Technology

The new machines come with several features designed to make road sweeping more effective and reduce airborne dust.

They will use water-sprinkling systems and dust-suppression mechanisms during cleaning. The machines will also have HEPA filters to help prevent fine dust particles from being scattered back into the atmosphere.

This is particularly important for Delhi, where road dust contributes to particulate pollution, including PM10 and PM2.5.

GPS Tracking for Better Monitoring

All 70 sweeping machines will be equipped with GPS tracking systems. This will allow authorities to monitor their movement and operations in real time.

The system is expected to help officials check whether machines follow their assigned routes and scheduled cleaning parameters. It could also improve accountability and help authorities identify gaps in road-cleaning operations.

Multi-Shift Operations Planned

Municipal authorities and transport departments are coordinating the deployment to ensure smooth operations and regular maintenance.

The machines are also expected to operate in multiple shifts, allowing authorities to maximise their use across Delhi’s districts.

Focus on Cleaner Roads and Better Air

The initiative comes as Delhi continues to face persistent air-quality concerns, with road dust remaining an important source of particulate pollution.

By combining mechanised sweeping, dust suppression, GPS monitoring and upgraded waste-handling systems, the project aims to strengthen Delhi’s urban sanitation infrastructure.

The success of the programme, however, will depend on consistent deployment, proper maintenance and effective monitoring. If implemented as planned, the new fleet could help Delhi keep major roads cleaner while reducing the amount of dust entering the city’s air.
