New Delhi: Dipka Open Cast Project (OC), one of South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s (SECL) flagship mines, has begun FY 2026–27 with strong production and dispatch performance after recording its highest-ever annual output in FY 2025–26. Backed by enhanced environmental clearance for 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and a long-term expansion plan to 60 MTPA, the mine continues to strengthen its production capacity through technology, infrastructure and rehabilitation initiatives.

The mine produced 37.5 million tonnes of coal and dispatched 39.43 million tonnes during FY 2025–26, marking its best annual performance to date.

Production, Dispatch Exceed FY27 Targets

According to the Ministry of Coal, Dipka OC produced 12.66 million tonnes of coal up to 25 July 2026, achieving 104% of its progressive production target.

Coal production also recorded a 30.5% year-on-year increase compared with the corresponding period last year, reflecting improved equipment utilisation and operational efficiency.

During the same period, coal dispatch reached 13.87 million tonnes, achieving 109% of the progressive dispatch target, ensuring uninterrupted supplies to thermal power stations and industrial consumers.

Higher Profitability Reflects Operational Efficiency

Apart from production growth, Dipka remained one of SECL’s strongest profit centres during FY 2025–26.

The mine reported an overall profit of ₹3,230.91 crore, while profit per tonne increased to ₹827, driven by improved operational efficiency and cost management.

Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation Support Future Expansion

The Ministry said land acquisition and rehabilitation remain key to Dipka’s long-term expansion plans.

Following possession of Malgaon village, the project has made significant progress in the rehabilitation and resettlement of Hardi Bazar, one of the region’s largest rehabilitation projects.

The rehabilitation township includes civic infrastructure such as:

  • Roads
  • Schools
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Community amenities
  • Public utilities

The rehabilitation initiative has facilitated progressive land availability for mining while strengthening stakeholder confidence and social acceptance of the project.

Modern Infrastructure Improves Coal Evacuation

Dipka has developed an integrated coal evacuation network comprising:

  • MGR-connected silos
  • First Mile Connectivity (FMC) silos
  • Railway loading facilities
  • Road transport systems

The infrastructure enables efficient coal dispatch to consumers, including NTPC Sipat and thermal power stations across western and central India.

Technology Enhances Productivity

The project has upgraded its mining operations with modern equipment and digital technologies, including:

  • 42-cubic metre electric rope shovels
  • High-capacity surface miners
  • In-pit belt conveyor systems
  • Advanced silo loading facilities
  • Drone-based mine monitoring
  • Digital mine management platforms

According to the Ministry, these technologies have improved productivity, mine planning and operational monitoring while reducing delays.

Environmental Measures Strengthen Sustainable Mining

Dipka has also implemented several environmental initiatives to support sustainable mining operations.

These include Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Systems (CAAQMS), fog cannon-based dust suppression, wheel washing systems, plantation drives, deployment of electric vehicles and plastic waste recycling facilities.

The Ministry said these measures have improved environmental management while supporting regulatory compliance and operational transparency.

Expansion Roadmap Extends to 60 MTPA

Following the enhancement of environmental clearance to 40 MTPA, Dipka OC is now preparing for its next phase of expansion towards 60 MTPA through continued land acquisition, rehabilitation, infrastructure development and technology adoption.

The Ministry said the expansion plan is expected to strengthen Dipka’s contribution to domestic coal production and India’s energy security.
