Leadership Updates: Chitranjan Kumar Assumes Charge as Director (Technical) of Eastern Coalfields Limited

With over three decades of experience across Coal India subsidiaries, Chitranjan Kumar brings extensive expertise in mining operations, technology, safety, sustainable mining and operational excellence to ECL.

Sanctoria: Chitranjan Kumar has assumed charge as Director (Technical) of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), bringing with him more than three decades of experience in the coal mining sector.

A seasoned mining professional, Mr. Kumar has held several key positions across subsidiaries of Coal India Limited. He brings extensive expertise in mining operations, technical management, strategic leadership, statutory and environmental clearances, land acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R), production enhancement and sustainable mining practices.

His appointment is expected to further strengthen ECL’s focus on technological advancement, operational excellence, sustainable mining and safe coal production.

Chitranjan Kumar Brings Over Three Decades of Coal Sector Experience

Mr. Chitranjan Kumar is a highly experienced mining professional with more than 30 years of service in the coal sector.

He completed his B.Tech from BIT Sindri in 1991 and subsequently obtained a First Class Manager’s Competency Certificate in 1997. He also holds an MBA degree.

Throughout his career, he has successfully handled major mining and operational responsibilities, including:

  • Large-scale mining projects
  • Statutory and environmental clearances
  • Land acquisition
  • Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) issues
  • Production and productivity enhancement
  • Sustainable mining initiatives
  • Mine reclamation and eco-restoration
  • Mining safety and operational efficiency

His extensive experience spans multiple subsidiaries and operational areas of Coal India Limited.

Leadership at Magadh-Sanghamitra Area, CCL

Before joining ECL, Mr. Kumar served as Area General Manager, Magadh-Sanghamitra Area of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL).

During his tenure, he played an important role in securing major forest clearances for mining projects and advancing the 20 MTY Sanghamitra Open Cast Project (OCP).

His leadership contributed to:

  • Securing forest clearances for mining activities
  • Facilitating the handover of forest land for mining operations
  • Expediting approvals for capacity expansion
  • Advancing the Sanghamitra OCP

These initiatives helped facilitate the expansion and development of mining operations in the area.

Key Achievements at CCL and BCCL

Mr. Kumar has held several important assignments in Bokaro & Kargali Area of CCL and Block-II Area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).

During his tenure, he contributed to the resumption of production at Karo Mines and played a key role in commissioning BCCL’s first Highwall Miner and a 5 MTY Washery.

He also helped resolve long-standing Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) issues, paving the way for further operational expansion.

Under his leadership, Block-II Area recorded its highest coal production in 10 years and achieved a profit of ₹830 crore in 2024. The area also registered an impressive 100% growth in Output per Man Shift (OMS) within three years.

Focus on Sustainable Mining and Mine Reclamation

Mr. Kumar has also made significant contributions to sustainable mining and environmental management.

During his tenure at Barora Area, BCCL, he spearheaded land acquisition efforts for the Muraidih Underground Project.

He also led TERI-backed eco-restoration initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable mining and mine reclamation.

Under his leadership, the Barora Area received the Chief Minister’s Award for Environmental Compliance, recognising its efforts towards environmental management and compliance.

Achievements at Kathara Area, CCL

Earlier in his career, Mr. Kumar served at Kathara Area of CCL, where he contributed to improving mining operations and production performance.

During his tenure, he:

  • Surpassed production targets.
  • Achieved the highest-ever departmental production at the Sawang-Govindpur Project.
  • Successfully implemented Bottom Ash Stowing at Sawang Colliery.

These initiatives reflected his focus on operational efficiency, production enhancement and the adoption of improved mining practices.

Earlier Association with Eastern Coalfields Limited

Mr. Chitranjan Kumar’s association with Eastern Coalfields Limited dates back to his earlier tenure as an Assistant Manager at Rajmahal Area.

During this assignment, he played a key role in operationalising the Truck Dispatch System (TDS), which contributed to improving operational efficiency in mining and coal dispatch operations.

His return to ECL as Director (Technical) marks a new phase in his association with the company.

Chitranjan Kumar Receives Several Prestigious Awards

Mr. Kumar’s contribution to the coal and mining sector has earned him several prestigious awards and recognitions.

His major honours include:

  • Coal Minister’s Award: 2021-22 and 2022-23
  • Best General Manager Award: 2018-19
  • National Safety Award: 2008 and 2009
  • H.B. Ghosh Memorial National Safety Award by MGMI: 2008-09

These recognitions highlight his contributions to mining operations, safety, production and leadership.

International Exposure in Mining Safety and Management

Mr. Kumar has also gained international exposure in advanced mining safety and risk assessment techniques.

He underwent specialised training at SIMTARS in Brisbane, Australia, gaining exposure to international practices in mining safety and risk management.

He was also a participant in the Advanced Global Techno-Management Programme 2025, conducted by ASCI Hyderabad in collaboration with ESCP Business School, France.

His international training and management exposure add to his extensive technical and leadership experience in the coal mining sector.

ECL CMD Welcomes Chitranjan Kumar

Welcoming Mr. Chitranjan Kumar to the ECL family, CMD, ECL, Mr. Satish Jha said that his appointment as Director (Technical) is expected to further strengthen the company’s commitment towards technological advancement, operational excellence, sustainable mining and safe coal production.

Mr. Jha also highlighted that Mr. Kumar’s vast and diverse experience will make a significant contribution to the continued growth and development of Eastern Coalfields Limited.

With his extensive experience across CCL, BCCL and ECL, Mr. Kumar is expected to play an important role in strengthening the company’s mining operations and advancing its focus on safety, technology, sustainability and operational performance.
