New Delhi: The military combat parachute system (MCPS) has achieved a major milestone after the Defence research and development organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a high-altitude trial in Ladakh. The indigenous system was tested at the Nyoma-Mudh Drop Zone from an altitude of 22,000 feet in extreme weather conditions of minus 15 degrees Celsius. The successful test highlights India’s growing self-reliance in advanced defence technologies and strengthens the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.

DRDO Conducts Successful High-Altitude Military Combat Parachute System Trial

DRDO carried out the test at the Nyoma-Mudh Drop Zone in eastern Ladakh, one of the highest military drop zones in the world. The trial involved test jumpers executing a combat jump from 22,000 feet above mean sea level under extremely challenging environmental conditions. Temperatures during the mission dropped to nearly minus 15 degrees Celsius.

Safe Deployment And Landing

The parachute was deployed at approximately 20,000 feet. The test team landed safely at an altitude of around 13,700 feet, demonstrating the reliability and operational effectiveness of the system in extreme terrain and weather conditions.

What Is The Military Combat Parachute System

The Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) has been designed and developed by DRDO’s Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, in collaboration with the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru.

The system is designed for tactical insertion of special forces personnel carrying combat loads into operational areas where conventional deployment methods may not be practical.

MCPS enables paratroopers to jump from aircraft, deploy parachutes at pre-determined altitudes, navigate accurately and land safely in designated operational zones. It is specifically designed for specialized military missions in difficult terrain and sensitive combat environments.

The system supports High Altitude High Opening (HAHO), High Altitude Medium Opening (HAMO), and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) missions. These operational modes allow special forces to enter target areas while reducing exposure and improving mission flexibility.

  • Oxygen system

One of the key advantages of MCPS is its compatibility with India’s Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). This reduces dependence on foreign navigation systems and improves operational security in combat situations.
