Mumbai/New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited has approved the development of a 600 MW greenfield solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, marking a major expansion in its renewable energy portfolio.
The decision was cleared by the company’s Board of Directors during a meeting held on April 13, 2026, as part of its long-term clean energy strategy.
Project to Include Large Battery Energy Storage System
The upcoming project will not only include solar power generation but also a significant storage component to improve grid efficiency.
Key features of the project include:
- Solar capacity: 600 MW
- Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): 550 MWh (co-located)
- Total project cost: ₹3,294.86 crore (including IDC, taxes, and expenses)
- Execution timeline: 15 months from EPC contract award
- Financing model: Debt and equity mix
The battery storage system is expected to enhance grid stability and ensure better utilisation of renewable energy output.
Strategic Push Toward Clean Energy Transition
The company stated that the investment aligns with its broader business diversification strategy, moving beyond its core natural gas operations into renewable energy.
