Mumbai: The Maharashtra Waqf land encroachment cases have become a major focus after the Maharashtra government announced the formation of a special bench of divisional commissioners to speed up the settlement of disputes related to Waqf land across the state. The move aims to ensure faster decisions, remove illegal Waqf entries where found, and improve transparency in handling land-related disputes.

Maharashtra Waqf Land Encroachment Cases: Government Announces Special Bench

The Maharashtra government has decided to create a special bench of divisional commissioners to review and fast-track cases involving alleged Waqf land encroachments and disputed Waqf property records. The decision was taken after a review meeting chaired by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on August 5 regarding disputed land entries linked to the Maharashtra State Board of Waqf (MSBW).

Maharashtra Waqf Land Encroachment Cases: Who Will Be Part Of The Special Bench

According to the government, the special bench will include divisional commissioners from Maharashtra’s six administrative regions:

  • Konkan
  • Pune
  • Nashik
  • Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
  • Amravati
  • Nagpur

The bench will examine disputed cases and work towards quicker disposal through a uniform process.

Why Was The Special Bench Created

The decision follows complaints regarding alleged Waqf land entries, including disputes involving tribal land in Darehbram village of Nashik district. Officials said similar disputes have emerged in different parts of Maharashtra, making it necessary to establish a dedicated mechanism for faster case disposal.

Maharashtra Waqf Land Encroachment Cases: Revenue Minister’s Directions

During the review meeting, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule instructed officials to verify the facts in every disputed case. He directed authorities to remove Waqf land entries if they are found to be illegal under the law and initiate appropriate legal action wherever necessary. The minister also asked officials to ensure that every case is resolved quickly, fairly and according to legal procedures.

What Is The Objective

The Maharashtra government says the new system aims to:

  • Speed up pending Waqf land dispute cases.
  • Ensure uniform decision-making across all regions.
  • Verify disputed land records through proper legal scrutiny.
  • Take action against illegal land entries wherever established.
  • Improve transparency and efficiency in land administration.
