India Adds Record 6,057 MW Wind Power in FY26, Total Capacity Crosses 57,443 MW

India's installed wind power capacity reached 57,443 MW by June 30, 2026, while wind power generation touched a record 106.7 billion units in FY 2025-26. Gujarat remained the leading wind energy state, according to official MNRE data.

New Delhi: India’s installed wind power capacity has reached 57,443 MW as of June 30, 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The latest official data also shows that India generated 106.7 billion units of wind electricity during FY 2025-26. This marks the country’s best annual performance in recent years and highlights the fast growth of renewable energy in India.

The information was shared by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The figures are based on official data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

India Records Highest Annual Wind Power Capacity Addition

India added 6,057 MW of new wind power capacity during FY 2025-26. This is much higher than the additions made in the previous two years. At the same time, wind electricity generation also increased from 83 billion units to 106.7 billion units, showing strong growth in renewable energy production.

India Becomes the World’s 4th Largest Wind Energy Market

According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) Report 2026, India ranked 4th globally in installed wind power capacity as of December 31, 2025. The ranking reflects India’s growing investment in renewable energy and its commitment to increasing clean electricity generation.

India Installed Wind Power Capacity: Government Initiatives to Promote Wind Energy in India

The Central Government has introduced several policies to support wind energy projects across the country. Major initiatives include:

  • Green Energy Corridor for better power transmission
  • Transmission infrastructure planning up to 2030
  • 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through the automatic route
  • Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) targets till 2029-30
  • Viability Gap Funding (VGF) for offshore wind projects
  • Green Energy Open Access Rules
  • National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects, 2023
  • Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) for renewable energy trading
  • Faster payments to renewable energy developers through Letter of Credit (LC) or advance payment system

These policies aim to increase renewable energy production, attract investments, and improve India’s clean energy infrastructure.
