New Delhi: The India Japan Bullet Train Project has reached a major milestone. India and Japan have agreed to start the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project with Made-in-India high-speed trains and a globally interoperable signalling system. The decision will help keep the project on schedule and support India’s goal of becoming a global manufacturing hub for modern rail technology.

The Government of India has said the first commercial bullet train service is expected to begin in August 2027. Japan will continue to provide technical support, safety expertise and engineering guidance throughout the project.

What Is the New India-Japan Bullet Train Agreement

India and Japan have jointly decided that the first trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor will be manufactured in India. This decision was taken after Japanese suppliers could not meet the delivery timeline required for the first operational section between Surat and Vapi.

Both countries agreed that using Indian-built trains will help launch the project on time while maintaining Japanese safety and engineering standards.

Why Is India Using Made-in-India Bullet Trains

There are several important reasons behind this decision.

1. To Avoid Delays

The project aims to start commercial operations in August 2027. Using Indian-made trains will help meet this deadline.

2. To Support Make in India

Manufacturing high-speed trains in India will strengthen the country’s railway industry and create new job opportunities.

3. To Build Local Technology

India wants to develop long-term expertise in designing and manufacturing world-class high-speed trains.

4. To Prepare for Future Bullet Train Routes

Domestic manufacturing will make it easier to build more high-speed rail corridors across India in the future.

What Is a Globally Interoperable Signalling System

The project will use a globally interoperable signalling system. This means the signalling technology will follow international standards instead of being limited to one country’s system.

Benefits include:

  • Better safety
  • Easier future upgrades
  • International compatibility
  • More flexibility for future bullet train projects

Japan Will Continue to Support the Project

Although the trains will be built in India, Japan remains India’s most important partner in the project. Japanese engineers have been working on the project since construction started. Their responsibilities include:

  • Engineering design
  • Safety standards
  • Quality checks
  • Technical guidance
  • Construction supervision

This ensures that the project maintains the high safety standards for which Japan’s Shinkansen system is known.
