Jaipur: The Rajasthan uniform civil code panel has moved a step forward after the Rajasthan government formed a high-level committee to prepare the draft law. The panel will be led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.

The move is important because the proposed law may bring one common civil framework for issues like marriage, divorce, inheritance, live-in relationships and polygamy in the state. The announcement was made by Rajasthan ministers during a press briefing, and reports say public consultation will also be part of the process.

Details of Rajasthan Uniform Civil Code

The Rajasthan government has formed a 5-member committee to prepare the draft of the Rajasthan Uniform Civil Code, 2026 (RUCC).

What Is the Rajasthan Uniform Civil Code Likely to Cover

As per the official announcement reported by multiple outlets, the proposed Rajasthan UCC framework is expected to include provisions related to:

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Inheritance and ancestral property rights
  • Equal rights for men and women
  • Prohibition of polygamy
  • Mandatory registration of live-in relationships

This means the state is looking at a law that could create common civil rules across communities in personal matters.

Rajasthan Uniform Civil Code: Public Consultation Will Be Part of the Process

One important part of the Rajasthan government’s plan is public consultation. Reports say the committee will:

  • Hold public consultations
  • Collect opinions and suggestions
  • Use a dedicated online platform to gather feedback from citizens

This suggests the government wants the drafting process to include public input before a final law is prepared.

What Is a Uniform Civil Code

A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) means one common set of civil laws for all citizens in matters such as:

  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Maintenance
  • Adoption
  • Inheritance
  • Succession

At present, many of these issues are governed by different personal laws based on religion and community traditions. A UCC aims to bring uniformity in these areas.
