Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday carried out a significant reshuffle in the Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre, transferring, promoting and posting 15 officers across the state with immediate effect.
The Home (SC) Department issued the orders as part of a broader administrative exercise aimed at strengthening leadership in key policing units, filling important vacancies and improving operational efficiency across commissionerates, district police units and specialised wings.
The reshuffle covers a wide range of assignments, including crime investigation, anti-terror operations, women and child safety, district policing and urban law enforcement.
Key Transfers in Chennai and Tambaram Commissionerates
Among the prominent changes, D. Kannan, who was serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Welfare and Estate, Greater Chennai Police, has been transferred as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Headquarters and Administration, Tambaram Police Commissionerate.
Meanwhile, A. Velmurugan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Crime Branch, Tambaram, has been posted as Superintendent of Police-cum-Assistant Inspector General of Police (Modernisation) in the office of the Director General of Police, Chennai.
Officers on Compulsory Wait Get New Assignments
Two IPS officers who were on compulsory wait have received fresh postings.
G. Stalin, IPS, has been appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Crime Branch, Tambaram Police Commissionerate.
Similarly, D. Ramesh Babu, IPS, has been posted as Superintendent of Police, Anti-Terrorism Squad, Chennai.
The appointments are expected to strengthen both criminal investigation and anti-terror capabilities within the state police force.
Focus on Women and Child Safety
The reshuffle also includes important appointments in specialised units dealing with vulnerable sections of society.
V.V. Geethanjali has been appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Against Women and Children Wing, Greater Chennai Police.
The wing plays a crucial role in investigating crimes against women and children while ensuring victim support and protection mechanisms.
Security and Urban Policing Assignments
In another important posting, P. Sundaravadivel has been appointed as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Security, Greater Chennai Police.
The security wing is responsible for safeguarding key installations, VIP security arrangements and other critical security operations within the Chennai metropolitan region.
Tiruppur Gets New Deputy Commissioner
R. Ramesh Krishnan, who was serving with the Anti-Terrorism Squad in Madurai, has been transferred as Deputy Commissioner of Police, North, Tiruppur City.
His experience in specialised policing is expected to strengthen law-and-order management and crime control efforts in the rapidly growing industrial city.
New Posting in Avadi Commissionerate
K. Maheswari, Superintendent of Police in the Tamil Nadu Commando Force, Chennai, has been posted as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Redhills, Avadi Commissionerate.
The appointment is seen as part of the government’s effort to deploy experienced officers in important suburban policing jurisdictions.
Tiruvannamalai Gets New Superintendent of Police
One of the notable district-level changes involves R. Uthayakumar, IPS, who was serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Koyambedu, Greater Chennai Police.
He has now been appointed Superintendent of Police, Tiruvannamalai district.
Uthayakumar replaces A.C. Karthikeyan, who has been transferred and posted as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Adyar, Greater Chennai Police.
The move brings experienced urban policing leadership to one of Tamil Nadu’s important districts.
Five ASPs Promoted as Superintendents of Police
In a major promotion exercise, the government elevated five Assistant Superintendents of Police to the rank of Superintendent of Police.
The officers promoted are:
- Kunal Uttam Shrote
- Akash Joshi
- Anshul Nagar
- Arpita Rajput
- Banavath Aravind
Following their promotions, they have been assigned important responsibilities in various locations across the state, including:
- Chennai
- Tiruppur
- Tirunelveli
- Crime Branch-CID
- Tiruchirappalli
The promotions are expected to strengthen the leadership pipeline within the Tamil Nadu Police.
Strengthening Key Policing Units
The latest reshuffle reflects the government’s focus on reinforcing crucial operational and investigative wings of the police force.
Several of the appointments are concentrated in:
- Crime investigation units
- Anti-Terrorism Squad operations
- Women and child protection wings
- District police administration
- Urban policing commissionerates
- Security and intelligence-related functions
Officials believe the changes will enhance operational efficiency and improve coordination across policing units.
Administrative Exercise Approved by Government
The transfer and promotion orders were approved by K. Manivasan, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government.
The reshuffle forms part of the state’s routine administrative process aimed at ensuring that experienced officers are placed in strategic positions where their expertise can contribute effectively to law enforcement, public safety and crime prevention.
With key vacancies now filled and several officers receiving expanded responsibilities, the Tamil Nadu Police is expected to witness stronger leadership across important operational areas in the months ahead.
