Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has effected a key police posting, transferring Anshul Nagar, a 2022-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, as Superintendent of Police (SP), Kanniyakumari district.

The order was issued on Friday, with Nagar moving from his current assignment as Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Tirunelveli, to take charge of the Kanniyakumari district police.

The posting marks a significant early-career responsibility for the officer, who entered the Indian Police Service after securing All India Rank (AIR) 537 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021.

Nagar’s professional journey has also included a stint with the Lok Sabha Secretariat as a Research Officer, as well as qualification in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) examination in 2018, before he eventually secured his place in the IPS.

Who Is Anshul Nagar?

Anshul Nagar is a 2022-batch Indian Police Service officer belonging to the Tamil Nadu cadre.

He is a direct recruit (RR) to the IPS and entered the service after clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Born in 1993, Nagar hails from Jaipur, Rajasthan. His academic journey took him from Rajasthan to Delhi, where he pursued higher education at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.

He completed a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and subsequently obtained a Master of Arts (M.A.) in History.

His academic background in humanities was followed by a career that combined competitive examinations, research work and eventually frontline policing.

From Jaipur to St. Stephen’s College

Nagar completed his early schooling in Jaipur, his home state.

For higher education, he moved to Delhi and studied at St. Stephen’s College, one of the country’s well-known institutions.

He graduated with a B.A. degree before pursuing an M.A. in History.

His academic training in history preceded his entry into a series of competitive government roles, ultimately leading him to the Indian Police Service.

Cleared CAPF Examination in 2018

Before becoming an IPS officer, Anshul Nagar had already demonstrated his aptitude for competitive examinations.

In 2018, he cleared the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) examination for the post of Assistant Commandant.

The qualification was an early step in his pursuit of a career in public service and uniformed government service.

However, he continued to pursue opportunities in the broader civil services and public administration space.

Joined Lok Sabha Secretariat as Research Officer

Nagar subsequently qualified for the Lok Sabha Secretariat examination and began working as a Research Officer in 2019.

The assignment provided him with experience in legislative and parliamentary research before he moved towards the civil services.

His work at the Lok Sabha Secretariat became another important stage in his professional journey, adding research and institutional exposure before his eventual transition to the IPS.

UPSC CSE 2021: Secured AIR 537

Nagar continued preparing for the civil services while working in the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

His efforts culminated in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021, in which he secured an All India Rank of 537.

The result earned him induction into the Indian Police Service, after which he joined the 2022 batch of the service and was allocated the Tamil Nadu cadre.

His journey from clearing the CAPF examination to working as a Research Officer and eventually securing an IPS position reflects several stages of competitive selection before entering the police service.

Joined IPS in December 2022

Anshul Nagar’s date of appointment to the IPS was December 19, 2022.

As a direct recruit from the 2021 Civil Services Examination, he became part of the 2022-batch IPS cadre.

Since entering the service, he has taken up policing and administrative responsibilities in Tamil Nadu, gaining experience at the sub-divisional and district levels.

Served as ASP in Madurai

During his early IPS career, Nagar served as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Thirumangalam Sub-Division, Madurai district.

The assignment placed him directly in charge of policing responsibilities at the sub-divisional level.

As ASP, he was involved in areas including law enforcement, community policing and sub-divisional administration, gaining frontline experience in handling policing challenges and maintaining public order.

The assignment was an important part of his transition from institutional and research-oriented roles into field policing.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Tirunelveli

Nagar later served as Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Tirunelveli.

The assignment brought him into a higher urban policing responsibility and further expanded his field experience.

His move from sub-divisional policing to the DCP-level role preceded his latest transfer to Kanniyakumari.

Now SP, Kanniyakumari

The Tamil Nadu government has now transferred Anshul Nagar as Superintendent of Police, Kanniyakumari district.

The posting gives the 2022-batch officer responsibility for policing and law-and-order administration in one of Tamil Nadu’s prominent districts.

As district SP, Nagar will oversee the functioning of the district police and be responsible for maintaining law and order, crime prevention, investigation and overall policing administration.

The appointment represents a notable progression in his relatively young IPS career.

An Unusual Career Journey Before IPS

Anshul Nagar’s career path stands out for the variety of competitive and professional experiences he accumulated before joining the IPS.

He first cleared the CAPF examination in 2018, subsequently joined the Lok Sabha Secretariat as a Research Officer in 2019, and continued preparing for the civil services.

His success in the UPSC CSE 2021 with AIR 537 eventually brought him into the IPS.

After joining the service in December 2022, he moved through field assignments in Tamil Nadu, including ASP, Thirumangalam Sub-Division, Madurai, and DCP, West Tirunelveli.

He will now take charge as SP, Kanniyakumari, marking another important step in his policing career.
