New Delhi: DRDO missile technology transfer received a major boost after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the transfer of technologies related to all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian industries. The move is aimed at strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and accelerating India’s journey towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence.

The decision will allow eligible Indian companies to manufacture DRDO-developed missile systems within the country, reducing dependence on imports and expanding indigenous production capabilities.

Rajnath Singh Approves DRDO Missile Technology Transfer

The Ministry of Defence announced that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has cleared the transfer of technology (ToT) for all conventional missile systems developed by DRDO.

The approval is being seen as a significant policy decision that will increase private-sector participation and help Indian industries manufacture advanced defence systems using indigenous technology.

What Is Technology Transfer

Technology Transfer (ToT) is a process through which research organizations share their technology, designs, manufacturing know-how, and technical expertise with industry partners.

In this case, DRDO-developed missile technologies will be made available to qualified Indian defence manufacturers for production purposes.

Why DRDO Missile Technology Transfer Is Important

India has been working to reduce dependence on foreign defence equipment and increase domestic production. The latest approval supports the government’s vision of creating a strong defence industrial ecosystem capable of designing, developing, and manufacturing advanced weapon systems within the country.

The Ministry of Defence said the initiative will promote greater participation of domestic industries while encouraging indigenous manufacturing and innovation.

Benefits For Indian Defence Industry

The decision is expected to:

  • Increase indigenous missile production.
  • Expand opportunities for private defence companies.
  • Strengthen India’s defence supply chain.
  • Support MSMEs and technology partners.
  • Create high-skilled jobs in defence manufacturing.
  • Improve export potential of Indian defence products.

DRDO’s Growing Partnership With Industry

The announcement comes at a time when DRDO is increasingly working with private companies under its Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) model.

The organization has been encouraging private-sector participation in missile systems, ammunition, aircraft components, surveillance systems, and other advanced defence technologies.

Recently, DRDO also invited Indian defence firms to participate in the development and production of strategic weapon systems, signaling a broader push towards industry collaboration.

Support For MSMEs And Startups

The government said the technology transfer programme will strengthen the domestic industrial base and enable participation from MSMEs and technology-focused companies.

This is expected to create a larger defence manufacturing ecosystem that can support future missile programmes and advanced military technologies.

What is the Impact of DRDO Missile Technology Transfer

India’s defence sector has witnessed rapid growth in recent years through initiatives such as Make In India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Technology transfers from DRDO have already helped private companies manufacture advanced defence equipment, including missile components, aerospace systems, surveillance technologies, and military hardware.

Experts believe the latest move could accelerate the production of indigenous missile systems and reduce manufacturing timelines by leveraging the capabilities of private industry.

Boost To Defence Corridors

The policy could also benefit defence manufacturing hubs across India, including the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor and Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor.

These corridors have attracted major investments from defence and aerospace companies and are expected to play a larger role in missile production and supply-chain development.
