Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government, under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has approved a property-tax exemption for residential houses owned or occupied by serving defence personnel, former soldiers, their spouses and widows of martyred soldiers in areas covered by Gram Panchayats.
The decision was taken as part of the state government’s efforts to provide financial relief to defence personnel and their families and acknowledge their service and sacrifice. It involves an amendment to the Gujarat Gram and Nagar Panchayats Taxes and Fees Rules, 1964.
Who will benefit?
The provision covers:
- Serving defence personnel and their spouses
- Former soldiers and their spouses
- Widows of soldiers who died in service
- The benefit is restricted to one residential house owned or occupied by an eligible beneficiary within Gram Panchayat limits.

The government said the measure will reduce the Panchayat tax burden on eligible families and provide direct financial support to soldiers, veterans and families of martyrs.
“We also stand with the families of those who protect the nation.”
The decision was taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, with the Panchayat and Rural Housing portfolio led by Rushikesh Patel and Minister of State Sanjaysinh Mahida.
A measure recognising the families of martyrs
The inclusion of widows of martyred soldiers gives the exemption a specific welfare dimension. By covering their residential homes, the state government has sought to provide financial relief to families of personnel who made the supreme sacrifice.
The exemption, however, is limited to one residential property used by the eligible beneficiary and applies to properties within Gram Panchayat jurisdiction.
Amendment follows public consultation
The state government had first proposed changes to the existing rules through draft amendments published in the Extraordinary Gazette in December 2025. Objections and suggestions were invited before the final rules were notified.
After considering the responses received, the government issued the Gujarat Gram and Nagar Panchayats Taxes and Fees (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
When will the exemption take effect?
The amended rules have been issued under the Gujarat Panchayats Act, 1993, and will come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
The decision provides a targeted tax benefit for defence personnel, veterans and martyrs’ families while recognising their contribution to the country.
