Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated a new 317-bed Transitional Hospital in Vyara, Tapi district, and laid the foundation stone for an upcoming 800-bed hospital under the UNM Medical College and General Hospital project.
The healthcare expansion aims to bring advanced medical treatment closer to more than 8 lakh people from Tapi and tribal areas along the Gujarat-Maharashtra border.
317-Bed Hospital Opens in Vyara
The newly constructed hospital has been developed within the existing Vyara General Hospital campus. Existing medical services and patient treatment will now shift to the new facility, ensuring continuity of healthcare while the larger 800-bed hospital is constructed.
Spread across 9,986 square metres, the hospital has 271 ward beds and 46 critical-care beds, along with facilities for ICU, NICU/PICU and emergency care.
It also has 24 OPD rooms covering 17 clinical specialties, increasing the daily patient-handling capacity from around 700 to nearly 1,200 patients.

Advanced Facilities Under One Roof
The hospital includes four operation theatres, pathology and microbiology laboratories, a blood storage centre, X-ray and USG facilities and a post-mortem facility.
Other facilities include an 8-bed dialysis unit, CSSD, Kangaroo Mother Care room and Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre ward, equipped with modern biomedical equipment.
With specialised treatment now available in Vyara, residents will have less need to travel around 75 km to Surat for advanced medical care.
₹910-Crore Healthcare Hub Planned
The next phase will include a new 800-bed hospital, a 150-seat MBBS medical college and a student hostel. The overall project is estimated to cost ₹910 crore and will be developed by the UNM Foundation under the PPP model in collaboration with the state government.
The medical college is also expected to create an opportunity for tribal students to pursue medical education closer to home.
The project is being taken forward under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, with the broader objective of expanding healthcare and improving access to medical education in the tribal region.
Healthcare Closer to Tribal Communities
The combined healthcare infrastructure is expected to provide faster access to emergency and critical care for people in Tapi and adjoining border areas.
The initiative also adds a medical education component to the region’s healthcare expansion, potentially strengthening the local ecosystem for doctors, healthcare workers and specialised medical services.
At the inauguration, Tribal Development and Tapi district in-charge Minister Naresh Patel, Minister of State for Sports and Tourism Jayram Gamit, Torrent Group Director Jinal Mehta, MP Parbhu Vasava, district representatives, MLAs and senior officials were present.
The expansion marks a significant addition to healthcare infrastructure in Gujarat’s tribal belt, with the new hospital addressing immediate healthcare needs while the larger medical college and hospital project aims to build a long-term healthcare and medical education hub in Vyara.
