Kolkata: West Bengal is set to witness the inauguration of two major industrial projects, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announcing that a ₹6,000-crore project at Haldia Petrochemicals will be inaugurated on October 14, ahead of Durga Puja.
Adhikari made the announcement at a press conference at the state secretariat on Monday. He also said an L&T project at the state’s Silicon Valley hub would be inaugurated on August 27.
₹6,000-Crore Haldia Project
The Haldia project is a phenol and acetone manufacturing facility being developed under Haldia Petrochemicals’ subsidiary, Adplus Polymers & Chemicals.
The project, estimated at around ₹6,000 crore, is scheduled for inauguration on October 14.
Key features reported about the facility include:
- An on-purpose propylene plant based on olefin conversion technology.
- A large-scale phenol production unit, described by industry reports as the country’s largest.
- Production of phenol and acetone for use across several industrial sectors.
The facility is part of Haldia’s existing petrochemical ecosystem and is expected to add domestic manufacturing capacity for these chemicals.
Adhikari said, “On October 14, a project worth around ₹6,000 crore will be inaugurated at Haldia Petrochemicals.”
L&T Project to Be Inaugurated on August 27
The Chief Minister also announced that an L&T project would be inaugurated at the state’s Silicon Valley hub on August 27.
The announcement comes as the state government highlights a series of investments and industrial projects in West Bengal.
Private Healthcare and Other Investments
Adhikari said West Bengal was also seeing investment in the private healthcare sector and other industries, with several projects in the pipeline.
The Chief Minister recently said the Adani Group had committed to fast-track a proposed 2,000-bed multi-speciality hospital in New Town, with 1,000 beds planned for free treatment of underprivileged patients and the remaining 1,000 for commercial services.
Financial Assistance for Journalists Increased
The state government also announced an increase in financial assistance for journalists.
According to the announcement:
- 154 journalists previously receiving assistance of up to ₹2,000 per month will now be eligible for assistance of up to ₹5,000 per month.
- The state government has also made arrangements for healthcare services for journalists.
The existing West Bengal Pension Scheme for Journalists, 2018, provides monthly assistance to retired journalists; the state’s 2026-27 budget documents record 154 retired journalists receiving the earlier ₹2,500 monthly pension through direct benefit transfer.
The latest announcement by the Chief Minister raises the assistance ceiling to ₹5,000 per month for the 154 journalists covered by the announcement.
