Hindustan Zinc Partners with MFL India to Deploy 30 Electric Trucks for Zinc, Lead Transport

Six-year deal will gradually replace diesel trucks on the Rampura Agucha Mine-to-smelter route, with dedicated charging stations to support cleaner industrial transport.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Hindustan Zinc has partnered with MFL India under a six-year agreement to deploy 30 electric trucks for transporting zinc and lead concentrate from its Rampura Agucha Mine in Rajasthan to the company’s smelters. The contract can be extended by an additional two years.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of heavy industrial transportation while maintaining the movement of mineral concentrate between the mine and smelting facilities. MFL India will also develop and operate dedicated charging stations for the electric truck fleet.

30 Electric Trucks to Replace Diesel Fleet in Stages

Under the partnership, the electric trucks will gradually replace diesel vehicles currently operating on the route.

Key Details

  • Electric trucks: 30
  • Contract period: Six years
  • Extension: Up to two additional years
  • Route: Rampura Agucha Mine to Hindustan Zinc’s smelters in Rajasthan
  • Partner: MFL India
  • Charging infrastructure: To be developed and operated by MFL India
  • Transition: Diesel trucks to be replaced progressively

The transition will take place in phases as the electric trucks and charging infrastructure are deployed, allowing material movement to continue without disruption.

Dedicated Charging Infrastructure for Electric Fleet

MFL India will establish and operate dedicated charging stations required to support the electric trucks.

The charging infrastructure is expected to provide the operational support needed to run the fleet reliably on the mine-to-smelter route.

The partnership also allows local drivers to remain part of the transportation network as the fleet transitions from conventional diesel vehicles to electric trucks.

Hindustan Zinc Expands Cleaner Vehicle Fleet

Hindustan Zinc has been increasing the use of electric and cleaner-fuel vehicles for material transportation.

During the last financial year, the company added 42 electric vehicles for material movement. Its combined fleet of electric and LNG-powered vehicles reached 232 vehicles.

The latest deployment of 30 electric trucks further expands the company’s efforts to introduce cleaner transportation solutions across its operations.

Electric Trucks Support Net-Zero Carbon Goal

The company is targeting a reduction in emissions associated with material transportation as part of its broader sustainability strategy.

Hindustan Zinc aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier. The introduction of electric trucks is expected to contribute to this objective by reducing reliance on diesel-powered heavy vehicles.

The initiative also demonstrates how large-scale mining operations can gradually shift to electric transportation while continuing regular industrial activities.

Cleaner Transport for Rajasthan’s Mining Operations

The Rampura Agucha Mine-to-smelter route is an important part of Hindustan Zinc’s material movement network. The deployment of electric trucks, supported by dedicated charging stations, is designed to maintain the flow of zinc and lead concentrate while lowering the environmental impact of heavy-duty transportation.

The partnership represents another step towards cleaner industrial logistics and greater adoption of electric mobility in the mining sector.
