Kolkata: Former IPS officer and Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir alleged that he was assaulted outside the Purba Jadavpur police station in Kolkata on Tuesday evening after a TMC protest rally in Mukundapur.
Kabir, who served as a senior officer in the West Bengal Police and later entered politics, alleged that he was attacked by people he described as BJP supporters while he was on his way to the police station in connection with a party colleague.
The allegation came after clashes were reported during a TMC rally protesting attacks and vandalism involving party offices and workers in the area. Kabir was seen with injuries to his face after the incident.
Kabir alleged that the assault took place in the presence of around 50 police personnel outside the station.
“I was going to Purba Jadavpur police station for my party colleague Baiswanor Chattopadhyay. But just outside the police station, a group of BJP goons attacked me. They pinned me down on the road and beat me blue-black right in front of 50 policemen who stood in silence,”
Kabir made the allegation during a Facebook Live from inside the police station.
He further said that after spending 31 years in the police service, he had never witnessed such conduct by police personnel.
TMC, BJP Trade Allegations
The confrontation followed a TMC protest march in Mukundapur over alleged attacks on party offices and workers.
TMC leaders said party workers were targeted during the violence. Among those who alleged injuries was Upasana Chowdhury, whose residence and car were also reportedly targeted. TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien blamed BJP workers and criticised the police over what he described as inaction.
The BJP rejected the allegations and said the violence stemmed from infighting within the TMC. BJP spokesperson Saptarshi Chowdhury called for a police investigation to establish what happened.
The competing claims had not been independently resolved at the time of reporting.
Who Is Humayun Kabir?
Humayun Kabir is a former IPS officer of the 2003 batch of the West Bengal cadre who later entered electoral politics. West Bengal Police records identify him as an SPS-2003 officer who was inducted into the IPS.
During his police career, Kabir held several senior positions in West Bengal, including assignments in Murshidabad and as Commissioner of Police, Chandannagar. In July 2019, the West Bengal government appointed him Commissioner of Police, Chandannagar, in the rank of DIG.
He also served as a Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police, a position referenced in reports following Tuesday’s incident.
From IPS Officer to Politician
Kabir left the police service in 2021 and entered electoral politics, joining the Trinamool Congress. He contested the Debra Assembly constituency and won the seat in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election.
He was subsequently inducted into the state Cabinet as a Minister of State. His tenure in the ministry ended in August 2022.
In 2026, Kabir was again in the political spotlight as an electoral candidate from Domkal in Murshidabad. Reports from March described him as a former IPS officer and TMC candidate seeking enhanced security amid alleged threats.
A Career Spanning Policing and Politics
Kabir’s transition from policing to politics has made his former law-enforcement background a recurring part of his public profile.
The latest incident brings his police background into focus as he has alleged that the assault occurred outside a police station and in the presence of police personnel. The allegations, however, remain disputed, with the BJP denying responsibility and calling for an investigation.
