IAS Amit Sharma Appointed Director of Census Operations & Citizen Registration for J&K and Ladakh; Karan Thapar Gets 1-Year Extension in DPIIT

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved key bureaucratic changes involving senior officers from the IAS and IRS cadres. Amit Sharma (IAS:2012:AGMUT) has been appointed as Director of Census Operations (DCO) and Director of Citizen Registration (DCR) for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, while Karan Thapar (IRS C&CE:2009) has received a one-year extension as Director in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

Amit Sharma Appointed DCO & DCR for J&K and Ladakh

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Friday, Sharma’s appointment is on a full-time basis and will remain effective till December 31, 2025. The tenure may be extended further as per the Central Staffing Scheme or until further orders.

He will replace Bhupinder Kumar (IAS:2011:AGMUT), who has been appointed as Director in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), New Delhi.

Career Profile of Amit Sharma

Amit Sharma, an officer of the 2012 batch of the AGMUT cadre, is currently serving in Mizoram as Special Secretary, Information, Communication & Technology (ICT) and Cooperation, with additional charge of DCO/DCR, Mizoram. Known for his administrative efficiency and digital governance initiatives, Sharma has previously worked in various key departments across union territories, including governance reforms, public administration, and citizen services.

His new role will involve overseeing Census 2025 preparations and citizen registration operations in the strategically significant Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Karan Thapar Gets One-Year Extension in DPIIT

In another development, the tenure of Karan Thapar (IRS C&CE:2009), currently serving as Director in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has been extended for one year — beyond February 16, 2026, up to February 16, 2027.

Thapar, who has been on central deputation since February 2020, has played a crucial role in industry promotion, trade facilitation, and policy implementation within the DPIIT framework.
