He is fluent in English, Hindi, and Khasi, and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and an MBA in Finance.

Top Bureaucratic Role

Wahlang served as the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya from August 1, 2022, succeeding Rebecca V. Suchiang. He continued in this role until his retirement on September 30, 2025, upon attaining the age of superannuation.

As Chief Secretary, he also functioned as the State Vigilance Commissioner, handling key administrative responsibilities at the highest level of the state government.

Key Positions Held

During his extensive career, Wahlang held multiple senior roles, including:

  • Additional Chief Secretary, overseeing departments such as Education, Public Health Engineering (PHE), and Home (Political & Police)
  • Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited and its subsidiaries (Generation, Transmission, Distribution)

Political Implications

His decision to stay away from electoral politics comes at a time when the BJP is actively seeking prominent faces to expand its influence in Meghalaya and the broader Northeast. Wahlang’s refusal is seen as a setback to these efforts, given his reputation as a seasoned and credible administrator.
