New Delhi: India has crossed the 300 GW milestone in installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

The latest figure represents more than 60% of India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.

Solar Accounts for Largest Share

The country’s 300.50 GW non-fossil capacity comprises:

  • Solar power: 164.59 GW
  • Wind power: 58.14 GW
  • Hydropower: 57.24 GW
  • Bio-power: 11.75 GW
  • Nuclear power: 8.78 GW

Solar power remains the largest contributor, accounting for more than half of India’s total non-fossil capacity.

The share of non-fossil fuel-based capacity in India’s total installed electricity generation capacity has also crossed 54%, with total capacity currently around 552 GW.

Solar Capacity Rises Sharply Since 2014

The growth in India’s clean energy capacity has been driven particularly by solar and wind power.

Solar capacity has increased from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to 164.59 GW in 2026. Wind power capacity has also grown from around 21 GW in 2014 to 58.14 GW.

During 2025-26, India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity.

Of this:

  • 44.6 GW came from solar power
  • 6 GW came from wind power

Renewable Energy Generation More Than Doubles

The expansion in installed renewable capacity has also been accompanied by a substantial rise in renewable electricity generation.

According to the government, renewable energy generation increased from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26.

Domestic Solar Manufacturing Gets Major Push

Alongside capacity expansion, the government has focused on strengthening India’s domestic renewable energy manufacturing ecosystem.

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has supported domestic manufacturing of high-efficiency solar modules.

The capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules has crossed 200 GW, compared with just 2.3 GW in 2014.

Green Hydrogen Mission Supports Industrial Decarbonisation

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is also pursuing industrial decarbonisation through the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The mission aims to support the development of India’s capabilities in the production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The government has positioned the clean energy transition not only as part of India’s climate commitments but also as an element of its efforts towards energy independence, industrial competitiveness and economic resilience.
