Indian Army Joins Hands with IISc Bengaluru and Indy Astra to Develop Fully Indigenous AI System

New Delhi / Bengaluru: The Indian Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to jointly develop a fully indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI)–based system. The project will also involve Indian startup Indy Astra, combining military expertise, academic research, and industry innovation.

Focus on Self-Reliant Defence Capabilities

The collaboration is part of the Indian Army’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and aims to strengthen India’s self-reliant defence capabilities. By leveraging domestic research and technology, the initiative reduces dependence on imported systems in critical defence areas.

Addressing Digital and Information Challenges

The AI-based system will focus on tackling emerging challenges in the digital and information domain, crucial for modern military operations. The project underscores the Army’s proactive approach to adopting advanced technologies for national security and operational readiness.

This initiative brings together the combined strengths of the Indian Army’s operational experience, IISc’s academic expertise, and the innovation ecosystem of Indian startups and industry. It highlights India’s push toward innovation-led defence preparedness and future-ready capabilities.
