New Delhi – In a groundbreaking initiative that merges innovation with sustainability, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has inaugurated India’s first field trial of Geocell technology on the DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway. This pilot not only redefines plastic waste utilization but also exemplifies BPCL’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through eco-friendly infrastructure development.
A New Life for Plastic Waste
The pilot project spans 1,280 square metres and utilizes up to 25 tonnes of mixed plastic waste, including multilayered packaging—often deemed non-recyclable. Through a 3D cellular confinement system known as Geocell, this waste is transformed into a load-bearing base layer for road construction. These Geocells, created from mechanically recycled end-of-life plastic, are filled with granular materials and laid beneath road sections to improve their structural integrity.
Tested, Proven, and Scalable

Prior to field deployment, BPCL and CRRI conducted extensive laboratory evaluations and full-scale plant trials in collaboration with Tata Projects. These trials confirmed that the plastic-based Geocell modules maintained their form and strength under load without cracking or deforming. The product’s 4–8 mm thickness meets performance expectations, positioning it as a viable and scalable solution for future highway construction.
A Distinguished Inauguration
The formal launch was graced by eminent dignitaries including Dr. Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR; Shri Chandrasekhar N, Head R&D, BPCL; and Dr. Manoranjan Parida, Director, CRRI. Senior officials from BPCL and NHAI were also present. Their collective presence underscored the institutional synergy driving this innovative sustainability effort.

CSR with a Purpose: From Pollution to Infrastructure

This initiative goes beyond infrastructure—it reflects a conscious CSR strategy to solve India’s mounting plastic waste crisis. By converting landfill-bound plastic into road-building material, the project aligns with the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and its Net-Zero vision. It also presents a strong case for the circular economy, where waste becomes a resource.
Toward National Expansion
With promising early results, BPCL and CRRI plan to expand Geocell trials to more challenging terrains. The Military Engineering Services is expected to test this innovation in remote and high-stress environments such as border roads and mountainous regions, potentially revolutionizing road-building methods across India.
