Patna: Bihar is preparing to host its first International Buddhist Conference from December 11 to 13, with the historic Vaishali set to welcome Buddhist scholars, monks, religious leaders and cultural groups from India and abroad.
The three-day event will take place at the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum-cum-Memorial Stupa complex in Vaishali. The conference is expected to bring together participants from several Buddhist countries and showcase Bihar’s Buddhist heritage, culture and traditions to an international audience.
The event is also being positioned as an opportunity to strengthen Bihar’s place on the global Buddhist tourism map and create greater visibility for Vaishali as a heritage and spiritual destination.
High-Level Meeting Reviews Conference Preparations
A high-level inter-departmental coordination meeting was held on Thursday to review preparations for the conference. Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit and Development Commissioner Mihir Kumar Singh jointly chaired the meeting.
The Vaishali District Magistrate joined the meeting through video conference, while senior officials from the Tourism Department, Art and Culture Department and Information and Public Relations Department also participated.
The administration has been directed to complete preparations in a coordinated and time-bound manner so that the event can accommodate international guests, delegates and visitors smoothly.

Roads, Power and Healthcare Get Priority
With visitors expected to arrive from different parts of India and abroad, the state government is focusing on basic infrastructure and visitor facilities around the conference venue.
The Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner have directed officials to ensure:
- Repair and improvement of roads around the venue and adjoining areas.
- Uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the event.
- Modern healthcare facilities and deployment of medical teams.
- Smooth movement of visitors and delegates in and around Vaishali.
These arrangements are particularly important because the conference is expected to attract international Buddhist monks, religious leaders, scholars, devotees and cultural groups.
Buddhist Leaders and Scholars From Several Countries to Attend
Preparations have already gained an international dimension, with participation confirmed by Buddhist monks and religious leaders from countries including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Japan and South Korea.
Consent has also been received from 14 international scholars for the conference.
The participation of representatives from major Buddhist countries could give Vaishali an opportunity to strengthen its cultural and spiritual connections with the wider Buddhist world.
For Bihar, the event also provides a platform to highlight its historical association with Buddhism and promote heritage-based tourism beyond the state’s traditional tourist circuits.

24/7 Help Desks at Patna Airport and Railway Station
To make travel easier for visitors arriving from outside Bihar, round-the-clock assistance desks will be established at Patna Airport and Patna Junction.
The help desks will assist devotees and delegates with information and guidance during their arrival and onward journey to Vaishali.
A modern tent city is also being developed in Vaishali to provide accommodation and other facilities for visitors attending the event. The facility is expected to support the needs of participants during the three-day gathering.
Heritage, Culture and Buddhist Traditions to Take Centre Stage
The International Buddhist Conference will combine academic discussions with cultural and heritage activities.
The programme will include discussions on Buddhist heritage, Tripitaka recitations, heritage walks and a large handicrafts exhibition. International and well-known state artists will also present cultural programmes during the event.
The mix of scholarship, spirituality, art and heritage is expected to give visitors a broader understanding of Bihar’s cultural landscape.
The heritage walk, in particular, will provide an opportunity to connect the conference with Vaishali’s historical sites and Buddhist legacy.
Vaishali’s Global Tourism Potential
Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit said the International Buddhist Conference could take Bihar to a new level on the global tourism and Buddhist spirituality map.
Vaishali holds particular significance in Bihar’s Buddhist heritage, and hosting an international gathering there can help bring greater attention to its historical and cultural assets.
The conference can also support the wider tourism ecosystem by bringing visitors to the region and creating demand for local accommodation, transport, handicrafts, food and other services.
For local communities, increased tourist activity can create opportunities for small businesses and traditional artisans while encouraging greater preservation of the region’s cultural heritage.
Focus on Coordinated Execution
The state administration has asked the Vaishali administration and participating departments to complete all inter-departmental tasks within the timelines.
The emphasis on coordination reflects the scale of the event, which involves tourism, culture, transport, public health, power, infrastructure, hospitality and visitor management.
With international delegates expected to attend, the government is also seeking to ensure that visitors experience Bihar’s cultural richness and hospitality during their stay.
The three-day gathering will therefore be more than a religious or academic conference. It is being developed as an international platform through which Bihar can showcase its Buddhist heritage, cultural traditions and tourism potential.
As Vaishali prepares to welcome visitors from across the world, the conference could provide a significant push to heritage tourism while strengthening the state’s engagement with the global Buddhist community.
