Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has appointed senior IPS officer Abhay Kumar Singh (IPS:1993:TN) as the interim Director General of Police (DGP) and Head of Police Force (HoPF) following the hospitalization of incumbent G. Venkataraman (IPS:1994:TN). Venkataraman has been advised medical leave from 9 to 23 December 2025 to recover from severe chest pain.

DGP G. Venkataraman, who had earlier taken charge as interim DGP on 31 August 2025 after the retirement of former police chief Shankar Jiwal (IPS:1990:TN), was admitted to a hospital on 9 December 2025. Following medical advice, he has been sanctioned earned leave to ensure full recovery. During this period, Mr Singh has been directed to act as the in-charge DGP, overseeing all police operations in the state.

IPS Singh is a highly respected IPS officer known for his integrity, investigative acumen, and experience in anti-corruption operations. 

Born on 3 January 1966, Mr. Singh hails from Bihar. He completed a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.), equipping him with technical expertise relevant to modern policing.

Mr Singh currently serves as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Anti-Corruption Department, Tamil Nadu. He has held key positions across various departments, including vigilance, idol wing, and anti-corruption divisions, earning a reputation for efficiency and transparency.
