Recently, speculations regarding the political affiliation of the top cop, Mr. Prasun Banerjee (2006 batch IPS officer), reached its peak when Nabanna (West Bengal’s state secretariat) accepted his resignation in the backdrop of rumours of him contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Officer Banerjee had last served as the Inspector General (IG) of the Raiganj range — a post that shall be occupied by Mr. Rajesh Kumar Yadav (2002 batch IPS). Mr. Banerjee had previously served as the SP of South Dinajpur and Malda and also as range DIGs of Malda and Balurghat.
Speculators believe that Mr. Banerjee shall be pitted against the Bengal BJP President, Mr. Sukanto Majumdar, from his electoral fortress in Balurghat.
Numerous plays, documentaries, and short films are an embodiment of Mr. Prasun Banerjee’s creative prowess. One of the documentaries, co-directed by him, was selected for the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Officer Banerjee played the character of an IPS officer, “Avimanyu Dasgupta”, in the Bengali mega serial named ‘Desher Mati.’ He also directed a critically acclaimed documentary named “Paradise Lost: From Dazzle to Despair” — based on the Zamindari system in North Bengal.
