Visakhapatnam: A contingent of 22 IPS officer trainees, including two foreign officers, from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad, visited the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) on Monday as part of their Maritime Security Module training.

The visit was aimed at familiarising future police leaders with India’s maritime infrastructure, coastal security mechanisms and modern port operations, while providing insights into the evolving logistics ecosystem and emerging security challenges.

VPA Chairperson Welcomes Delegation

The delegation was welcomed by VPA Chairperson J. S. Bindra, who delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting the port’s infrastructure, cargo handling capabilities and its vital contribution to India’s economy and maritime trade.

The presentation introduced the trainee officers to the strategic importance of Visakhapatnam Port as one of the country’s major maritime gateways and its role in supporting industrial growth and international commerce.

Trainees Briefed on Modern Port Operations

Senior officials of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority briefed the IPS trainees on several operational and technological initiatives undertaken by the port.

The officers were introduced to:

  • Mechanised cargo handling systems
  • Solar power generation initiatives
  • Use of treated water from sewage treatment plants for industrial purposes
  • The newly developed International Cruise Terminal
  • The Truck Parking Terminal and other infrastructure projects

The briefing provided the trainees with an understanding of how modern ports integrate sustainability, technology and operational efficiency to support growing trade volumes.

Focus on Maritime and Coastal Security

A key component of the visit was an interactive session on coastal security and maritime safety.

The IPS trainees engaged with senior port officials on issues related to maritime security, emerging threats in coastal regions, port protection measures and evolving logistics frameworks that are increasingly shaping India’s maritime sector.

The discussions offered valuable practical exposure to security challenges associated with critical port infrastructure and coastal management.

Senior Officials Present

VPA Deputy Chairperson Roshni Aparanji Korati was also present during the visit and interacted with the delegation.

The visit formed part of the National Police Academy’s efforts to expose IPS officer trainees to critical national infrastructure and specialised security domains, helping them develop a broader understanding of India’s internal security architecture.
