Indian Masterminds Stories

Ranchi: In a historic move, the Jharkhand government has appointed Tadasha Mishra, an IPS officer of 1994 batch from Jharkhand cadre, as the full-time Director General of Police (DGP) on December 30, 2025, just a day before her scheduled retirement on December 31. Prior to this, Ms. Mishra had been serving as the acting DGP following the resignation of Anurag Gupta (IPS: 1990: JH) in November 2025.

The Home Department issued a notification confirming her appointment in accordance with the amended Jharkhand Police Chief Selection and Appointment Rules, 2025.

A Steady Rise from Railways to Home Department

Before taking over as acting DGP, Ms Mishra served as Special Secretary in the Home, Prison & Disaster Management Department and as Additional Director General (ADG) of Railways, overseeing security across the state’s railway network. Her career includes senior roles such as Inspector General (IG) and other key administrative positions, earning her a reputation for diligence, discipline, and efficiency.

Personal Background and Challenges

Born in Odisha, Mishra joined the Indian Police Service in 1994 under the Bihar cadre and was later allocated to Jharkhand after the state’s formation in 2000. She is a mother of two and has faced personal tragedies, including the loss of her son in 2018, which she has cited as a turning point in her life. Colleagues describe her as resilient, compassionate, and deeply committed to public service.

Advocate for Women in Policing

Ms. Mishra has been a vocal advocate for gender sensitization and the empowerment of women in the police force. She has emphasized systemic reforms to make policing more inclusive, including establishing crèches for working mothers, ensuring gender-balanced postings, and providing equal opportunities in field assignments. Her leadership style combines empathy with administrative acumen, making her a role model for women officers across Jharkhand.

Decades of Service and Distinguished Career

Over three decades, Ms. Mishra has held several significant positions in both united Bihar and Jharkhand, including:

  • City SP of Ranchi
  • SP of Bokaro
  • SP of Giridih
  • DIG Personnel
  • IG Human Rights
  • IG Special Branch

She is known for her composure, administrative efficiency, and integrity, earning widespread respect in the police force.

Ground-Level Policing and Anti-Crime Initiatives

As SP of Bokaro, Mishra implemented strict but people-friendly policing, successfully reducing extortion, kidnapping, and organized crime. She led multiple anti-Naxal operations in challenging terrains like Jhumra Pahar, demonstrating courage and tactical expertise. Her field leadership and prompt decision-making have been widely recognized.

Warm Welcome at Police Headquarters

Mishra’s assumption of charge as DGP was celebrated at the Jharkhand Police Headquarters, with senior officers and staff congratulating her on this historic appointment. Officials highlighted that her selection reflects the government’s commitment to gender equality, professionalism, and merit-based leadership.

A New Chapter for Jharkhand Policing

Although Ms. Mishra is set to retire on December 31, 2025, she will serve as DGP (In-Charge) until further orders. Under her leadership, the Jharkhand Police is expected to strengthen law and order, enhance coordination between security units, and boost citizen-police trust, especially in rural and Naxal-affected areas.

Her appointment as the first woman DGP of Jharkhand symbolizes professional excellence and progressive evolution in India’s civil services, inspiring a new generation of women leaders in law enforcement.
