New Delhi: In a key bureaucratic appointment, Amrit Agrahari (IRS-IT:2011), presently serving as Director in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the Ministry of Finance, has been appointed as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Monday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment for the balance period of his central deputation tenure or until further orders, whichever is earlier. His current deputation tenure is valid up to July 9, 2026, and he will continue in the PMO until that date.

From Economic Affairs to Prime Minister’s Office

Mr. Agrahari, an officer of the 2011 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), has held several key roles in India’s economic and financial administration. Before this appointment, he was Director in the DEA, where he contributed to key policy functions related to India’s macroeconomic management and international economic cooperation.

He initially joined the DEA as Deputy Secretary for the G20 Secretariat in December 2022. His tenure was later extended under the Central Staffing Scheme, and in March 2024, he was reappointed as Deputy Secretary on the recommendation of the Civil Services Board. His efficient handling of assignments and policy matters earned him recognition within the government system.

Career Highlights

Mr. Agrahari began his civil service career as Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in 2011 and later served as Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax in Nashik.

He subsequently worked in the Foreign Tax and Tax Research (FT&TR) Division of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Finance, where he dealt with international taxation, advance pricing agreements, mutual agreement procedures, and exchange of tax information.

Later, he was posted in the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-India), where he served as Deputy Director and later Joint Director, contributing to India’s anti-money laundering and financial intelligence framework.

Academic Background

Mr. Agrahari holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur (2005–2009), and a Master’s degree in Taxation and Business Laws from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad (2012–2014).

His strong academic background and extensive administrative experience make him well-suited for the responsibilities in the Prime Minister’s Office, which often involve inter-ministerial coordination and policy monitoring at the highest level.

About the Appointment

The PMO’s decision to bring in a senior IRS officer with strong expertise in finance, taxation, and international policy reflects the government’s continued emphasis on integrating domain specialists into key administrative positions.

Mr. Agrahari’s tenure in the Prime Minister’s Office is expected to further strengthen coordination on economic and fiscal policy matters, given his extensive experience in economic affairs and financial intelligence.
