NRDC and NMDC Sign MoA to Accelerate Indigenous Mining Technology Commercialization in India

Partnership focuses on IPR facilitation, technology transfer, and value-added services to boost innovation and efficiency in the mining sector
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: The National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) and NMDC Limited have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to accelerate the commercialization of indigenous mining technologies. The agreement aims to strengthen technology transfer, intellectual property rights (IPR) facilitation, and value-added services across the mining sector.

The MoA was signed by Cmde Amit Rastogi (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director of NRDC, and Vinay Kumar, Director (Technical) of NMDC, at the NRDC headquarters in New Delhi.

Key Focus Areas of the Collaboration

The partnership will focus on three major areas:

  • Technology Commercialization: Identifying and transferring NMDC-developed technologies to industry players
  • IPR Facilitation: Supporting patent filing, protection, and intellectual property management
  • Value-Added Services: Providing technical evaluation, valuation, and licensing support

NRDC will identify commercially viable technologies from NMDC and license them to other companies. These may include mining processes, equipment designs, and operational methodologies, enabling broader industry adoption.

Strengthening Indigenous Innovation in Mining

NMDC has developed several advanced indigenous technologies, including ore beneficiation and material handling systems. However, due to its core focus on mining operations, many of these innovations remained underutilized.

This agreement bridges that gap by leveraging NRDC’s expertise in technology transfer and commercialization, ensuring that these innovations reach a wider market. It also aligns with the government’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat, reducing dependence on imported mining technologies.

Role of NRDC in Technology Transfer

Under the agreement, NRDC will:

  • Facilitate patent filing and IPR protection for NMDC innovations
  • Assess the market potential and valuation of technologies
  • Draft and manage licensing agreements
  • Ensure compliance and monitor royalty payments

With decades of experience, NRDC will act as a crucial link between innovation and industry adoption.

Benefits for Mining Industry and Stakeholders

The collaboration is expected to bring significant benefits:

  • Small and medium mining companies gain access to advanced technologies without heavy R&D investment
  • Faster adoption of efficient and environmentally sustainable practices
  • Improved productivity and safety standards in mining operations
  • Creation of training opportunities and skill development across the workforce

Additionally, NMDC will generate royalty income from licensed technologies, which can be reinvested into further research and innovation.

Driving Growth Through Technology and Collaboration

This strategic partnership is set to enhance the technological capabilities of India’s mining sector. By combining NMDC’s innovation strength with NRDC’s commercialization expertise, the initiative will promote wider adoption of indigenous solutions and boost sectoral efficiency.
