Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police DGP Nalin Prabhat has said the growing participation of children and youth in sports and other constructive activities reflects their commitment to peace and development in the Union Territory. Addressing the flag-in ceremony of the ‘Run for Unity’ marathon in Srinagar, Prabhat said the increasing youth participation was helping Jammu and Kashmir move towards peace and prosperity while countering attempts to disrupt the region.
Run for Unity Reflects Youth’s Commitment to Peace
Prabhat said the rising participation in the marathon each year was a positive indication of the direction in which the younger generation was moving.
He said the participation of children and youth showed their commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous future. The DGP also highlighted the increasing preference among young people for constructive activities and sports.
According to Prabhat, the energy of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth is being channelled in a positive direction, with young people increasingly choosing peace over violence and progress over destruction.
He said such participation also sends a message against the “nefarious designs” of the neighbouring country aimed at disturbing peace in Jammu and Kashmir.
Police Using Sports to Engage Young People
The DGP said Jammu and Kashmir Police and its Armed Police units have been organising sports tournaments and other activities to provide young people with constructive platforms.
The police are also using the Civic Action Programme to strengthen engagement with communities and create opportunities for youth participation.
Prabhat said sustained interaction through sports and other initiatives was bringing the police and young people closer. He described the growing relationship between the two as an important part of efforts to maintain peace and social stability in the Union Territory.
Anti-Drug Campaign Records Over 4,000 Arrests
Prabhat also highlighted the police’s ongoing anti-drug campaign while addressing the gathering.
He said 3,257 cases had been registered since April 11 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Around 4,000 people had been arrested, while 170 convictions had been secured. More than 2,500 cases had also been disposed of, according to figures cited by the DGP.
The police have also attached 288 properties valued at more than ₹138 crore in connection with drug-related cases. More than ₹80 lakh in cash has been seized as part of the action.
Prabhat further said 144 people had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, or PIT-NDPS. He described the figure as the highest among states and Union Territories.
Counter-Terror Operations and Law and Order
The DGP also spoke about the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the police force’s counter-terrorism efforts.
He said September had witnessed several operational achievements for J&K Police. Alongside counter-terror operations, the force continued to focus on crime prevention, detection of criminal activities and maintenance of law and order.
Prabhat said the police remained engaged in efforts to counter attempts to disrupt peace in the Union Territory.
The remarks came as the police continued to combine security operations with community-oriented initiatives aimed at engaging young people through sports and other constructive programmes.
19 Mountain Rescue Teams Deployed During Amarnath Yatra
Highlighting the role of the J&K Armed Police in public safety, Prabhat referred to the deployment of 19 Mountain Rescue Teams during this year’s Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
The teams were involved in supporting security and rescue arrangements during the annual pilgrimage, which draws large numbers of devotees to the Union Territory.
The DGP also praised the coordinated rescue response following the disruption of the Gulmarg Gondola service. J&K Police, its Mountain Rescue Teams and State Disaster Response Force personnel worked together to evacuate tourists who were stranded after the service was disrupted.
Prabhat said the rescue operation demonstrated the role of the force in responding to emergencies beyond its regular policing responsibilities.
Armed Police Personnel Shine in Sports and Mountaineering
The DGP also highlighted achievements by J&K Armed Police personnel in mountaineering and sporting activities.
Among the achievements he mentioned were successful summit expeditions to Kang Yatse in Ladakh and Kolahoi Peak in Anantnag. He also referred to a medal won at an Asian Championship in Vietnam.
Such achievements, according to Prabhat, provide additional opportunities for engagement between police personnel and young people and help strengthen the relationship between the force and the community.
Building a Stronger Bond With J&K Youth
The Run for Unity event brought together senior police and civil administration officials, sportspersons and a large number of young participants.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, ADGP Armed Police Nitish Kumar, ADGP CID M.K. Sinha and other senior officials attended the flag-in ceremony.
Prabhat said continued engagement through sports, civic initiatives and other constructive activities would help strengthen the connection between the police and youth.
The DGP’s remarks underline the growing emphasis on youth engagement alongside security and law-and-order measures in Jammu and Kashmir. By providing young people with opportunities in sports and community activities, authorities are seeking to channel their energy towards constructive pursuits while strengthening social participation.
The broader focus is on creating an environment in which peace, development and youth participation reinforce one another. For Jammu and Kashmir, initiatives that bring young people into sports and community activities remain an important part of efforts to promote a more peaceful and progressive future.
